Eaton M45 supercharger- what next?

I accidentally(?) won an Eaton M45 supercharger last night on e bay. (after trying quite a lot of that nice Leffe beer that Tesco sell...) Anyway I have made a decision to bolt it on to my 1380 and now need to make the manifolds etc to suit. My initial plan is to make from stainless. What I am after is a set of drawings or plans to help me on my way. Can anybody oblige? I am also after any bits you may have knocking around so please get in touch eg modified crank pulley etc. I know I could have bought a kit but I couldn't resist the challenge. Hee hee. Cheers. Mark

Theirs a chap in yeovil that has done the same, he had his car on the rollers and first run it was chucking out 124, sure did go, he did real off what bits he used did look very nicely done, made has own manifold out of stainless too. His name was graham he makes intercoolers for the BMW minis, GRS motorsport I fink.

The M45 is a big old beast, really it was too big for the New Cooper S.

I would certainly think twice about using one on any A series.

I know people have done it and that lots of kits are sold, but not many of these efforts work correctly.

If Newtune's contact really has one that works right I would strongly suggest you contact him as I know many people who have bought other kits that employ tghis blower & they are in the main bitterly disappointed.

Aaawh, you've spoilt it now... I feel like you've just nicked my BMX wheels when I was 12.
Would you mind expanding a bit Mark? What kind of problems would you anticipate? I do have an old Metro turbo lump lying around and toyed with the idea of sticking that on but didn't want to chop the bulkead and as far as i am aware you would be hard pressed to locate the T3 elsewhere. Cheers. Mark

Some of the common problems that I have heard about are;

Icing of the carb & inlet tract causing the car to stall repeatedly at junctions.

In most of these installations the carb is mounted a long way away & very low down in relation to the inlet ports, this leads to fuel condensing out on the inlet tract wall & running back down into the carb with a variety of associated problems.

The Blower is designed for cars between 2 & 3 litre ( http://www.eaton.com/EatonCom/ProductsS ... /index.htm ) so is never really spinning fast enough to become anywhere near efficient.

Fitting an M45 is definitely the cheapest way to supercharge an A series engine, but it is never the best way to use forced induction on an A series.

As I said in my last posting IF you can speak to & get advice from someone who has overcome these problems it may be worth looking into further. But in my experience, most of the people who do this conversion get so far down the road having spent time & money on it that when it is finally working they will tell all their mates it's great & then quietly remove the whole shebang later with a little less fanfare :oops:

If you already have a Metro turbo setup, I would strongly suggest you look into fitting this as it will be MUCH better than fitting a blower thats too big for your car.

Spend a bit of time reading up on Turbominis, there are some very good blokes on there, but sometimes seperating the BS from fact can be a bit of a nightmare.

its not overly big, apart from physically, if you want more boost you have to speed it up by using a smaller pulley, this increases the heat which is a bad thing! especially as I've not seen any effort gone into cooling the charge.
The carb icing has been addressed by using heater pipe near the inlet.
The bad thing about these kits, and this comes straight from eaton themselves, is that it was never designed to be a suck through system and the seals in the charger are not designed to withstand an air / fuel mix.
Its better, and has been seen to work, to mount the charger at the front and have it blowing through the normal turbo su.
If we were doing this again thats what we'd do.

I know Graham spend a while work out pulley sizes and his inlet is water heated to stop the icing, he a nice chap for what time I spend with him, give him a ring ?

One of the feature cars in the July 2010 issue of "Mini Magazine" is running a 45. You could contact the owner through the magazine to get information from him about his experience with that blower on a Mini.
