1970 MK3 Historic Rally Car

Post by billycooper »

Another one to the stable, and I couldn't resist this one !, very well known local car, Devils Own winning car in 2014, along with loads of other local success's.

Very strong and sound shell (later than 1970 !) 100 bhp (at the flywheel) car but only running on a single 1 1/2 SU at the moment, ideal for what its been used for, newly built in 2014 from a bare shell, lots of little trinkets on the car, Motor engineer built, and I would think it would convert to a stage car quite easily.

This will be the car me and Nick will now use at Blyton and Harewood as the grey car I bought last year (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19851) is still in bits and still at the welders getting the roll cage fit, and time is running out due to a holiday and work commitments, and the grey car may well be for sale when its finished now because i really only bought it for Blyton as KEC is still in bits   , Mind you the grey car's MED built engine may end up in KEC !, unless I get an offer for it I cant refuse complete.

Ill pop the full spec of the car up in the next few days, here's a couple of pics

Good purchase - when push came to shove I didn’t think he’d actually let it go!

I actually didn’t go up to buy it, just for a brew and ideas on how to advertise it for him, but came away with the car !

He was struggling for a decent navigator really, but me and Nick will just have a bit of fun in it, it’s not gonna be as quick as KEC, but its more useable in different events, and a better starter car than the grey one for Nick

Yes it would make a nice addition , but ... i've got enough engine dilemmas at the moment for the other 3 cars, so that will have to stay where it is for me !!

Yeah been a while since I did any of these type of events, 2002 Illuminations I think !, 16 years older now George !, we will see !

It's something to use till I bring KEC back out hopefully in 2019, with a fresh unit and some suspension tweeks, oil pressure completely went at Barbon last year and something was trying to nip up at Harewood the week before when it was 10 mph short up the hill.

i'll have to let all you other chaps chase the podium this year at Harewood, I think with this car with its Rally weight and its 1 1/2 carb is a high 70 second car

unless it rains   ;) which I hope it doesn't !

Picked up the car eventually yesterday, and spent today on it, Blyton 2 weeks away ! , few nice surprises as I went through the car, the strength in the car is one of the cars best features, it may be abit heavy but the floor , sills, cage and plates and seat mounting etc are all extra reinforced, engine spec is SW5 cam, ported 36/29 head, roller rockers, vernier timing gear, Aldon red dizzy, lightened flywheel, AP clutch, HIF 44 carb, ATB diff, running a 3:44 ratio but it has incredible torque, and so quick through and out of the tight corners, never ran a ATB diff or even an lsd before so that will be a learning curve.

All the usual adjustable suspension , grooved brake discs, rear anti roll bar etc

Car sits a bit high at mo, I’ll leave it for blyton and have a sort out before Harewood , entry gone in today for Harewood

Came with 8 revolutions, but I’ve changed to some minilites in my usual dark grey !

Car has never been polished since it was painted 4 years ago, and has a few small rally battle scars to sort, which I’m on with, but mechanically pretty much ready to go

Another good few hours on the look of the car, fresh wheels and tyres, matching dark grey with KEC, then I can mix and match !

Polished one wing ! , colour coming back nice , new grille ends, it had event sponsorship decals on rear quarters that need addressing next

Good spanner check and general clean

Really wanted to get rid of them later rear lights, but it’s all been wired up so nice !, see if I can find a nice boot lamp !

Log book come back with a mk3 chassis number, so it did start off life as a mark 3 to match the shell type it has (rather than a late mk2 number )

So cracking day out at Harewood at the Classic and vintage, i had guessed at the car being a high 70's car, so with Nick finishing up on his first ever event at 80, and myself in the 75's, went better than I thought, just over a second slower than KEC on the last "brains out" run, wasn't not too bad for a car running on a HIF44 carb and SW5 cam, but I really need to sort the suspension !

Paris-Dakar an the front and race on the back !, made for some interesting handling, i'm guessing I need some better donuts and lowered further

thanks for the pic Stu !

So I’ve fitted some red spot donuts and a set of hilos to try to make a start on sorting the suspension, and it’s severe wheel lifting, sat a little high at first, it’s settled down a bit now and I have some modifying to do to the hi los (thanks to Rich for pointing me in the right direction)

Any advice on tracking , other than parallel ?

And I think we ready to go again at Harewood , week on Sunday

Probably last outing of the year, as KEC needs sorting for Minis 60th year, hopefully a few mini events next year to celebrate!

Dragged this out of hibernation last night, wouldn't start straight away because ... it had no fuel in it ! , while checking why it wouldn't start I managed to break a fuel filter and a fuel pump  , will have to get the fuel gauge working !

Nick's going to use it again this year, first stop Blyton, then a couple of Barbon Hillclimb's (which he has managed to get the entries paid by his Motorsport mad boss !) and maybe an end of year at Harewood.

Then the car will be for sale before the end of the year, with a non Mini project for 2020
