Query re Number Plates - i understand a dated plate cannot be put on an older car than shown on the plate, but does the age of the car refer to the manufacture date or date of first registration.
I.e Car build December 1965. Registered February 1966. How old is the car? And could it wear a plate with a D suffix?

Re: Registration plates
That's true, except if you have a car which hasn't been registered in this country before, and when you are allocated an age related plate it is based on the date of manufacture provided by the manufacturer.
If a '65 car remained unsold and unregistered with a dealer until '67, I think it will keep a '67 reg, even if it subsequently gets a change of reg number.
But, If you have a car registered in '72 but which was built in '71 it will qualify to be tax free, as this is based on the date of manufacture.

Re: Registration plates
An existing registration will be based on when the car was sold but I believe you can re-register based on the date of manufacture. For example if your car was sold after the tax exempt cut off but was built before you can re-register to avoid paying tax. The new age related plate will be non-transferable though.

Re: Registration plates
The nil charge Historic Vehicle tax is based on proof of build date - there would be no need to re-register to have an earlier plate.
