I need some help identifing or tracing the origins of a crankshaft...

Has anyone seen some of this before?

First question Ed.....where/how did you come by it?

Crank belong to a friend and we're trying to verify it's origin. Seller claims it's a MiniSpares crank, Rich says MS never sold any cranks modified in such a way... Has anyone seen such mods to the counterweights before? Is this safe to use "in anger" (i.e racing)?

I've see weights in the counterweights on loads of high performance cranks. That is the proper way to do it.

here is a couple of photos for you

1) early minispares crank

note, no angled back drilling on big ends and shape of smaller webs. stamped onto the larger web is size (84mm in this case) and then engraved on same web is minispares part number. this crank was produced 2003, so its fair to assume all cranks of this age will be the same



2) newer minispares crank

note, angled back drilling (done to avoid having to drill through and plug smaller webs), acid etched (or done with a james bond lazer?) in the face of the web nearest the pulley end is the part number, stroke, job number etc in a neat font

these are farndon cranks. these where produced 2010




ive never seen an ms crank with the plugs done like this

As I said Farndon mine was of Metro challange era.
