In 1974 I bought my 1071 S from a friend minus engine and gearbox, these had been removed because the gearbox had destroyed itself. A picture of my 'S' in 1974 has appeared on this forum a couple of times. Wind forward over 30 years and my friend asks me to help him clear his garage because he is moving house and cannot take all the stuff in his garage with him, the last item out from under the bench is a short motor, very grubby but distinctly S looking, he had forgotten it was there, now I have it and I believe it to be the original motor for my S, however the engine tag is missing as is usual, knocked of when it had a rebore and never refitted.
Today I was cleaning a very grubby block and noticed that the number stamped on the main bearing caps is also stamped on the block, to the right of the water pump hole on a small flat area just by the block face.
My question is, can these numbers be used to date a block at all or are they stamped at random, my S was built on 13th March 1964. Although I am reasonably confident this block belongs to my S it would be nice if there was some way of confirming an approximate date of manufacture. Here's hoping.

Like a complete divi I did not post the numbers stamped on the caps and block, they ara C3754 and it is a Morris. S**t for brains.

im sure simon will be able to give you a rough date using the numbers, there where a consecutive thing.

Thanks for all your help, I have sent a PM to Simon and await his verdict, what ever the answer Guru was correct, it was a great find.
The block was luckily covered in about 10mm of oily grime, one of the worst I have seen, it was a great preservative, I had it put through a commercial dishwasher today at my favoured engine shop, took about 5 minutes and I was astounded at the result, brilliant, I will post a picture of the after, pity I did not thing to do a before photo.
+0.020 bore and looking good, engine man said I must coat it in WD40 or similar as now it is completely devoid of any grease/oil it will rust very very quickly, need to get it painted quick.
Best supplier of green engine paint - any recommendations, save me scouring the forum, being lazy.
