Does anyone know the correct 'silver-grey' colour (paint code) for 10" Rostyle Wheels? I have a blasted and etch-primed set of wheels now ready for painting.
I hope someone can help! Thanks in advance ...

I painted mine a Vauxhall silver (Astrid I think) and was pretty close match I reckon. But I'm not one to go for the full originality

I'm not sure whether there was a true Rostyle or even a true Dunlop steel wheel colour based on my experience. While restoring mine, when there were still zillions on the road, I used to carry a whole load of all variations of silver paint chip from Glasurit Beck who were based here in order ascertain the correct colour 'silver.........' Not even a chance! Every wheel I checked was slightly different.
There was a silly sequel to this......... I was doing a wheel paint colour check in a car park in Wantage while wifey was wasting time shopping. You know the sort of thing, crouched down looking at wheels between rows of cars where the mini's and clubmans were. It HAD to happen...... a policeman came over to me, radio cackling...., telling the control room that he was with the 'suspect'. We had a laugh and off he went.
Nope...., tried hard but I never ascertained a true constant silver colour

good one.
There have been a thread about this before, the early ones had a much darker Grey colour.
This can be seen here =

and on most of the MK 1 brochure/press material =

Later on in the MK 1 production did BL change it to a brighter Silver.

Thanks everyone for these responses.
I'll buy a can of the Moss Europe paint and see what it looks like. My concern is that it might be a little too 'bright' silver, and not sufficiently 'grey'. I'm kicking myself for not getting a paint supplier to match the colour before blasting ... one of my wheels did actually have clean, original paint under the tyre.

When you paint the wheels, here's a suggestion. Hang them from the ceiling with a piece of nylon cord through the centre and spin them. Don't need to be spun fast and do the rear first...... That way the paint can be directed from one direction evenly over the entire wheel. When dry, reverse the wheels and spray the fronts so that it hides any runs that might have come in from the rear. That's what Glasurit taught me to do

Hi,
Mine were the early darker colour, and Ford Nimbus Grey Metalic is a good colour match. I was going to use the inside (tyre side)of the rim to colour match, but all the wheels looked to have been sprayed black first, then sprayed silver from the front coating the inner well and the back in an overspray coat, so couldnt get a really good sample of paint. I took the wheels into work and shot blasted them and the black looked to be the origional first coat.

You could always use a Lazy Susan, IKEA do one for £5.50 which is 15" in diameter.

As Stu says, put them on your wheel SNUDDA & off you go.

That's a good idea for a fiver Surf Blue! I have a feeling in my bones that a proper pro spray job is what's needed to protect wheels - as opposed to a quick home blow job with a couple of aerosols

Sand blasting and powder coating is by far and away the best way.

Thanks for all the ideas and advice. I've ordered a SNUDDA from Ikea and I'll try spray painting with high-build primer and Moss Europe silver ... experiment with one wheel first!

I always think that powder coated wheels look over painted, the coating being to thick, and its usually to glossy. It's not as if most of us use our cars in winter when the salt is on the roads is it.

The comment above can be correct. It all depends on how good your powder coater is & what you ask them to do.

I've finally got round to having the Rostyle Wheels painted for my March 1972 built GT. In the end I went with the advice on colour given by 'Jerry' earlier in this topic ... Ford Nimbus Grey. I attach a couple of photos which include my trial colour-swatch … from light to dark the colours on the swatch are “Moss Europe Ltd's Wheel Silver”, “Ford Nimbus Grey” (my choice) and “Rover Steel Grey”.
I did have one wheel powder coated as an experiment. To my eye it didn't look right so I went down the route of shot-blast, etch prime, high build primer, colour coats and, finally, lacquer coat.
Dunlop Aquajet tyres beckon ...

Those wheels look great. But the stud holes look HUGE!
I bought a set of Rostyles off ebay a while ago & chucked them because the stud holes were worn, if anything yours look even bigger, I just hope that it's a trick of the photograph.

Mk2 and 3 S's. Answered earlier in the thread Steve........ There's no 'actual' colour in my tried and tested opinion. Just what was in the tank at Dunlop on the day

Mark F: The holes size may perhaps be a bit of an 'optical illusion' in the photos. Undoubtedly the holes are worn, however, the correct nuts are nowhere near bottoming out and each holds it's wheel firmly at normal torque. I'll continue to travel hopefully ...
