Is a light weight flywheel worth its weight?

Hello,
Just wondering whether I should splash out on a light weight flywheel. The engine is coming out shortly for a 276 cam, 12g206, and some other mods and I am trying to decide if the flywheel is worth the £150 or whether I should spend my money elsewhere on more pressing matters. I have read that it will make a big difference but I might wait a while. I suppose the flywheel can be changed with the engine in so there is no urgency. Cheers,

I put one on.
Although having to remove it and refix it ( in situ ) because of a bad vibration.......it makes heaps of difference fior initial accelleration

hi there, am i right in thinking that although this improves initial acceleration considerably, too light a flywheel can inpair torque performance through intermediate gears? ian.

I have read about the adverse effects however, the weight of the flywheel and it's affect on torque is relative to the weight of the car. Being that the mini is so light the adverse effects will be minimised.

it would be interesting to see what adverse effect in percentage terms this would have on torque figures for your engine through the gears, after all, i thought power/weight ratios were key to modified cars performance. if it was me,(personal preference) unless i was having the whole bottom end lightened and balanced, i would put the money to better use elsewere and fit it later. ian

I would say that on most moderately tuned road car a lighter steel was money well spent. Don't go for a competition ultra light though, this will mess with your car & make idling very fussy.
