Every cloud...... British Vita

Not sure if this post will be of interest but Pete suggested I share my experiences :?:

In the night/early hours following Halloween 1999 a moron set fire to my neighbours barn full of straw, one of several set by him that week.
The fire quickly spread to our workshop/garage and almost our house too.

We lost the whole building and contents in the inferno that ensued, it must have been burning quite a while before I heard the roof tiles exploding and went to investigate.

The telephone lines and the connected alarm system were all disabled as the wiring passed above the burning barn, as was the water supply which passed through our workshop.

15 hours, 100 firemen, several water bowsers and a drained duck pond (they could not find the hydrant as the first pump parked directly on top of it and there was no location plan or signage then) the fire was out.

All of my vehicle collection was gone :(
My TRD Toyota Supra Turbo, my Simtek F1 car, my son's Morris Mini Cooper S (he was just 7 at the time and it was to be his first car when restored), my West Surrey Racing Ralt RT3, my Ex works Triumph TR2, our Ferguson Little Grey T20 Tractor my friends Radical with it's brand new still crated engine along with all my tools equipment and memories

However we were all safe and everything, well almost everything, could be replaced.

Lessons to be learned......
We had no insurance on the garaged vehicles, far too expensive for the risk/value involved, after all we had fire alarms, sprinklers and security was pretty good.
If at all possible don't park/store all your possessions in one place especially documents and vehicles together.
Check that your alarm system does not rely on one source alone.
If you are fortunate to have sprinklers, check that your water supply is protected before the building entry point.

After a descent period of time we began to sort things out and the rebuild needed fresh planning permission  and took almost 2 years.
I then set out to replace at least some of the lost items, starting with vehicles...then things stared to look a little brighter and after time we decided to find a Cooper S for my son and I to prepare for his ultimate time to start driving, knowing how long these things take 8 years seemed reasonable

We found a car locally through an acquaintance and eventually purchased it in several boxes and complete with a chickens nest on the rear parcel shelf. It came from a shed not a barn though.
After another couple (well several) years passed by we decided to start work and subsequently noticed that all was not well, the car had been 'messed about' quite a lot.

After the first day I decided to google the registration number (early days of google back then) and we were shocked and amazed to see on the screen a picture of a race car, but with a different registration just one number in the sequence less, namely KDK 319F, there was no story just a link to a website.

Well as they say 'the rest is history' we now know we had the sister car KDK 320F formerly owned by British Vita Racing, 1967-1968, Barrie 'Whizzo' Williams, Will Dick who eventually sold it to a local policeman whose sister brought it to Somerset upon his death... as far as we can gather.

Due to overwhelming work commitments we have been unable to start work on the renovation until yesterday  However with the 50th anniversary of the cars historic and unique victory in the 1968 European Touring Car Challenge, ETCC.
We felt that this should not go unrecorded and have decided to mark this event by trying to get together a British Vita Racing display at Goodwood FOS next Summer.

In the meantime and having bored you with our story a few pictures of the progress/discoveries we made yesterday
Thanks for reading this far....well done..... I almost nodded off typing this

What a horrible, but ultimately uplifting story Trevor!

Thank you for sharing. I am so pleased to hear that you have finally begun the restoration of KDK 320, this is one car that I REALLY look forward to being back up & running again.

People "know me" for my love of Downton & Speedwell, but I'd give ALL that stuff up for a BRT car.

Yes..... But I'm not doing it! Every time I try to move anything it disappears quicker than Trump's common sense when holding a mobile device.... I'll let someone who's more adept at the buttons than me do it - this is too cool a car for me to loose into the ether!

What a terrible start, but positive outcome to the tale. Karma seems to recognise your loss, at least. I hope they caught the bugger that lit the fire?

Looking forward to this developing.

Thanks for the kind thoughts..

We did catch him.....
He drove past in the evening after the fire and I instantly knew it was him....Blue Ford Escort.....he then, by an amazing coincidence, ran into the back of a Land Rover in our local town Bridgwater, which turned out to be owned by the brother of the farmer, our neighbour, whose barn was set on fire. He was unhappy about the response he got regarding insurance etc. and called the police who searched the car and found an arsonists tool kit hidden under the rear seat :o
It all went to court, his Barrister cross examined me, but was an idiot of the first order so I gave him hell on details and timings which he had totally screwed up.
The moron got 18 months with 9 months off for 'good behavior' but whilst on remand in Wiltshire manged to set nine more barn fires
I hope there is a lesson to be learned here but I doubt it somehow.

Trevor was kind enough to show me the car a few years ago when I popped out to his place to collect some rods & pistons.

I will promise to do everything I can to assist in a Vita display happening at either FoS or Revival, after all, I am in a decent position to do so.

Such a shame all the boys have gone, Harry, Jeff, John Handley, engineer Jim Barham, all gone. I so wish I'd have done this when they were all alive but Harry would have been too ill to attend anyway and Handley died in 2001. It was great to get the Minisprint and KDK together though at Shelsley and maybe Buncombe could bring the Buick to a future event aswell?

Lots of holes in KDK's body (not rust!) as Trevor has showed on the inner cills but even the radius arms were drilled! Naught Vita! . Those bloody Abarth's were feather light though so they had to get creative!

Day 3.7 Imported twin tank bracket held in by self tapping screw.JPG
Day 3.6 Evidence of dramatic widening the rear arches.JPG

More pictures:
Does anyone recognise the alloy fixings and the strange S shaped pattern of rusty holes on the rear bulkhead ?

Could not fathom the twin tank fixing brackets in Almond green then woke up in the middle of the night and had a thought...as you do :?:
Checked the heritage certificate for 320F ....no twin tank from factory specified OK, but why almond green and not fixed to original mountings on rear bulkhead or floor (just a random self tapping screw here and there in the floor) and evidence of old spot welds.
Checked the heritage certificate for HDK 443E, which was originally Almond Green, Twin tank specified.
However took a look at the shell...... no brackets in the boot just the remains of the spot welds !!!!

It would appear that Vita just nicked the brackets from one car and fitted them (quite randomly) into the other

are the alloy fixings lined with rubber to make them into through bulkhead fire proof fittings?

Hi Rich
Thanks for the suggestion.
Seems like a logical explanation to me.
There is nothing inside them now, but it would make sense as the TJ Injection stuff was mainly in the boot.
There could have been a rubber washer/insert inside (or Vita could have left them out to save weight  )
They would look the same with or without the insert if there was a pipe or cable through the hole.

If as Rich suggest they are through bulkhead fuel line fire proofers could the hole pattern be from P clips holding twin (supply and return?) fuel lines to the bulkhead as they look like they lead to those holes ?
