Mk2 Rebuild.

Post by Wilder1992 »

Thought I'd better start a project page after just under a year of owning the mini. Picked up this Mk2 super deluxe after deciding Mk1 or Mk2 was the only way I could go, even though this is my first project. More updates to follow. It looks a fair bit different now.

So I got it home and straight into the garage it went, with the usual of spilling brake and hydrolastic fluid all over drive. The stripping process began, it has an unusual Kingsbury Mk1 Grille cover with an innocenti 1300 grille hiding behind it.

Would be great to see it left on its period correct yellow and whites!. Such a shame that so many people swop them for the black and silvers thinking they are doing the right thing!

That looks a great shell to start with - I'm not envious at all :?

Good luck with the project :)

Thanks, it is pretty good apart from the usual oversills put in place so the outer and inner sills are rusted. I've also made the decision to replace the boot floor and rear panel as there is a rather large dent by the fuel filler and the bottom of the rear panel wasn't it the best condition.

Strip continued interior, boot, lights, front panel, front wings along with the engine and wiring loom all removed.

Good luck with the build, I have one very similar (bit more rust) just starting the rebuild now.

Got a very long list of panels to buy

That is true, reflective plates came in 1967 but how many do you ever see on classic cars of that age now?? Looks a good project , hope you don't 'Cooperise' it! :D

Is that true for all cars after 67 then? So a 68 mk2 should have them? I always thought itbwas early 70s.

Nice project by the way, looks like a good solid base

The reflective plates first appeared in '67, but were not mandatory until August 1972.

My father purchased his first brand new car in August '68, a white Hillman Imp, and that had old style white on black plates.

It won't be cooperised, but it won't be completely standard either. Hoping to do some suitable adjustments that I can change back for originality easily enough when need be. Seems a shame to change the colour but the more I see Sandy Biege the more I dislike it. Will choose a period colour for the time.

That looks like a fantastic project, certainly a great basis to kick off with. I really look forward to watching your progress.

The other thing about black & yellow plates was that people couldn't wait to get them on their cars to make them look "more modern"

This is a typical example of how the classic car community today & original owners are totally at odds. Understandable though.

Quite abit to update so will do it in stages. All stripped out and mounted on a rollover Jig, then was the horrible task of scraping all the dirt, grease and oil off the bottom of the car, to reveal what's underneath.

Oversills off revealed what's underneath. Obviously expected a lot of rust.

That really looks pretty reasonable. The sills are of course shot, but the remainder of the floor is MUCH better than a lot I have seen.

I really like this one & look forward to seeing the next update.

Removal of the boot floor, the new floor has been lined up with heel board subframe mounts and the existing boot subframe mounts, measurements also taken. The floor was then fitted from underneath whilst the car was level.

Remains of the old boot floor.

I've also replaced the rear panel as the bottom was fairly rotten, it had a large filler filled dent just below the fuel tank hole as well. I decided it was easier to replace the panel up to the windscreen cut out, as its then just two short butt welds.

Boot lid fits okay, held panels with aircraft skin pins and plug welded into place.
