Depends how much power your electric system is demanding, have you a lot of big spot lamps and other power hungry accessories also how authentic you want it to look for the period of the car?

If its an early car it would be "period" to have a Lucas 11AC, on the later cars a 17ACR, (both I think are 35amps?) and should have more than enough power for a road car, I also found the 11AC ok on our rally car. If your car is an early one still with positive earth, PM me I have a positive earth 11AC surplus. Both 11AC and 17ACR are heavy, ideally you need a "works" alternator bracket and with the 11AC you need additionally the warning light control, a relay and a 4TR control box. Look out for these on ebay secondhand but check the condition. You could of course use one of the modern alternators built up to look like the original dynamo or a modern lightweight alternator, see Cambridge Motorsport and others for these.

We ran an Aldon Ignitor before changing back to points for Appendix K racing, it was negative earth, we found it trouble free. Aldon are a long established company with a history in racing sprites and midgets and also their own design of sports racer. Originally set up by Don Loughlin and Alan Goodwin both of whom if memory serves correctly worked for BMC in engine development before they set up Aldon. Not sure that either of them are still involved in Aldon today but the companies products are as far as I know held in high regard. I suggest you give it a go.

Not sure about your query on the on the capacity of the wiring.

Are you interested in the positive earth 11AC alternator?

What sizes did the old AC type alternators come in ? I am restoring Will Sparrows Mini WNX700H and having removed the bespoke loom which was done by John Smith of Lucas , I have come across the separate control box mounted behind the dash.

So looking for a new neg earth AC type alternator now preferable NOS but if they in short supply may consider good used

Add up your power requirement in watts (..say, 2 x 100w headlights, 2 x 100w spots, heater, ignition, wipers, electric fuel pump, a bit to recharge the battery, radio/stereo....) divide by 12 (volts) and voila as the froggies say.. something like 60 amps should be fine....

Do your sums...

Cheers, Ian
