BMC workshop clearout...

I had the opportunity to clearout the loft of an old BMC/BL garage this weekend and with it came a few gems and a lot of questions....



Best finds was a two NOS Mk1 inner steering colums, one NOS outer colum (for car w/steeringlock), one Mk2 inner colum, quite a load of the old Chrochill tools, and this:

The mat is is peristine condition and the rubber is soft and nice - just as new.... Cant be many of these around anymore.. Does anyone know what year/model it's for? My guess is a Mk1 "Basic", Pick-up or Van...

I also found a few other bits and hope some of you might be able to help me with what cars these are for:

Very good quality oil in the Morris lever arm dampers, believe it or not, well extreme technical stuff, unlike Austin's snake oil dampers/shock absorbers from then....

Looks to me like a Midget or Sprite damper. My dad used to work for a BMC dealership in Grantham and one of his favourite stories is how they had a clearout one day and into the skip went running boards and brass radiator cowl from a Bull Nose Morris! Ah those were the days!

about ten years ago the local rover dealer shut near work (about 100 meters away), i went in and asked about the tools and the guy said 'i'll get back to you'.....

three days later they threw them all in a huge skip then piled a load of metal girders and cut up four post ramps on top.

it was possible to see them, but impossible to reach them......arrgggggg!!!!!!!!

What's the exhaust for?

Can anyone confirm what model the rubber mat is for? It's for a LHD model btw.

that rubber mat could be worth a fair few quid on the dreaded fleabay.

left hand drive but i dare say a quick slice and would okay for a right hand drive.

i would make the cut a fraction bigger than the other cut then glue the cut of section to the left hand side.

or maybe an oversea's buyer will buy it for a left hooker

The mat is for a '59 LHD export basic model. Even in ratty condition they are very rare, so yours is probably unique. It would probably be unique even if it were for a RHD. Everyone I know working on '59s are going the "delux" route since there are simply no gray rubber carpet mats.

Is there a matching rear mat as well?

The rubber mat is a start 70ies Mini Van or Pick Up mat, definatly not a 59 mat
The partnumber LGA 6573 is not 59.
The floor fastener clips are not 59, they dont have any,
The pattern or grain is not 59, but later
But anyway, rubber mats are rare

That confirms my thoughts.... There are two "rings" in the pattern... one at the heelboard for Magic want gear and one at the middle rear - resumably for rod or remote type gear-stick...

I've received some help from an ex-BMC stockist so will hopefully be able to decypher som of the other part numbers soon.

The windscreens are Allegro and 11/1300 - imported from Gordon Spice's no less!
Exhaust is Princess and the repair panels most likely 1100/1300. The damper was a Marina unit.

Nothing like the van / pickup / early 70's 850 one that Ed has found.

But his is still a very, very rare find!
