Hi.

I tried to look in all topics, but no luck with this...
I've a mk1 with a unusual heater unit, wich i can't find anywere. It's kind of a square "box" on the inside, and the blower is mounted above the clutch, with air intake beyond the front grille. I'll post more detaild pics, but here's one for now. Just want to know why i don't see this in other mk1. Wich car models used this? Thank you all for your help with this

Thats the first type of fresh air heater, after the fug stirrer.

Only fitted for about 9 months during 1963.

I had one in my '63 woody and it was the best heater I ever had in a mini.

IIRC the heat control on the dash board worked the other way - ie push it in for cold.

The snail fans are popular with "minature steam" people for drawing the fire.

Being the car built before 63, could it be an "upgrade"? Or a modification some sort? What kind of heater would it use before? Is it possible to find one to replace this? Many thanks!

I had an early Super Deluxe built around October 62 that had that sort of heater.

The car also retains its original type heater valve

What month & year is your car ?

It was a factory option, and a rare one too. It will show on the Heritage certificate.

Why would you replace it ? shame to remove/replace a original feature.

1961 - 1963 was the "lifespan" of these heaters.

The fan unit is a Smiths item that was used in various British cars in the late '50s and early '60s including Minis, Astons, Land Rovers, MGs etc. Obviously the mounting brackets are different for the various cars.

Not so sure about the '63 only, unless you're talking domestic models. I have one on my December '64 built export model. Heritage Certificate states something along the lines of "High Output Heater" or something, under 'Options' (I'll check when I get home). It was destined for Finland mind you, so they probably needed a better heater.

According to the heritage certificate, the car was built in 05/nov 1959, although it was only registererd in April 60. Extras included "heater". I believe it has been reshelled same point. What it would be the right heater for that period? Thanks.

The following items = Air intake behind grill - heater valve - fan - bracket for fan switch (not switch) & heater unit are all part of the early fresh air type heater.

The big plastic hoses & the switch on the bracket are not thou.

OK, so the Heritage Certificate for my '64 export states "Boosted Heater".
I have the Smiths snail blower mounted on the inner wing, with the air intake behind the front grill, and fresh air hoses between the intake, the fan, and the heater box. My heater is a little different from the one pictured as it has the three position selector for Car, Screen, or Off on the front. The fan switch is mounted on the bottom of the heater box itself, no bracket.

A UK spec '59 deluxe car would have a fug stirrer heater, and no 4" hole through the bulkhead for the air hose.

Does the hole through your bulkhead look properly cut, with a formed edge ? And four fixing screw holes for a retaining ring ?

My '61 has the 4" bulkhead hole but with a blanking plate as they were still fitting fug-stirrers at that time.

Most effective blower, but always seemed to be in the way. If you are truly restoring, go for it. If you're just rebuilding, consider another answer.

has an entry under "Details of Factory Fitted Equipment" Four Kilowatt Heater
I just assumed this was a heavy duty heater for Canada
Nice to see some pictures of one installed but does this fan take the place of one in the heater box inside or do they work together?
I am sure my heater box has a blower in it as well.

Only one fan.

The Cooper S had the fan built in, but that was the later type of heater, as in MINIRATZ picture.
This type of heater was available both with & without built in fan.

My car is an early 1275-S built for the Swiss market. It does not have the blower under the bonnet as shown in MINIRATZ' first picture. Mine has the intake behind the grille and the large hose going through the firewall to the common internal heater as shown in MINIRATZ' second picture. I do not see enough room for both the heater blower and the brake servo to be under the bonnet of an -S.
