Just had entry form for Donington first round of HSCC (week after Oulton). Having spoken to them I can understand why charges have gone up; Silverstones prices for this year are 30% up on last year! Prices have evened up

20 min race is £195 . They have about 10 rounds this year, some are double headers. Gold cup is about the same but a 45 min race
45 minutes is £425(inc vat) with Masters and they have about 6 rounds

I'm busy trying to pay for and build a new crank rods and pistons so I may just go for the cheaper option with HSCC, but nothing set in stone

Hey Tim,

How are you ?

It's interesting looking at Masters costs this year, I can't find much price info for the series other than Masters this year unless its been posted in the past couple of days. Masters seem to have absorbed the VAT increase for some events, but there seems to be a variety to their race lengths and price model for 2011, for the published races this year - the following is true.

12 Mar Oulton Park, Masters Raceday £425 45 Mins Race
8-10 Apr Barcelona GP, Catalan Classic £895 60 Mins Race
23 Apr Snetterton, Top Hat Raceday £475 60 Mins Race
28 May Brands Hatch Indy, Top Hat Raceday £425 45 Mins Race
29-30 May Brands Hatch GP, Masters Festival £625 60 Mins Race £795 combined with Top Hat Race
17-19 Jun GP Historico do Porto £625 2x25 Mins Race
7 Aug Mallory Park, Top Hat Summer Festival £425 45 Mins Race

There's a real mish mash there - the one that stands out is the Brands race, if you can aford 3 days away mind. £795 for 105 minutes of racing and 50 minutes of qualifying. Thats over 2 and a half hours track time for £795. Snetterton seems better value, however the Headline overseas events are rather pie in the sky for mere mortals.

Speaking to James Beckett, he said the registartion fee is £150 if you are just planing on doing the UK Based Top Events, or I guess £75 if you just do the two.

The options I see you have for an Appendix K racer are as follows:-

Grand Prix de Pau Historique (part of above series)
------------------------------------------------
Pau Historique 950 Euros

2*30 min race

The above prices are based on a combination of this years published prices and what the costs were last year.

So there you go where should we race :-) There's certainly plenty of choice !!!!!!!

Obviously this is just what I am aware of and there are probably other places both in the UK and overseas where you can race your Mk 1 !!! Anybody care to add ???

Looking more likely that we'll be at Oulton now - so we'd better dust the cob webs off and get the car sorted out !

Want to do the event but like most having trouble coming to terms with entry fees. Car back up and running again and ready for Goodwood test day. If all goes well we are planning on putting an entry in.

Entry in Post - Bank account emptied

Looks like bread and water till the 12th of March so I can afford a pair of tyres as the ones that came of the front at Mallory were shot to pieces ! Also need to fix the rear brakes and replace the oil cooler, and try and get a shakedown test in - 4 weekends and counting !!!

And the misses is taking me shopping tomorrow for the little one tomorrow  apparantly she is desperately in need of more "Stuff", I tell ya "Stuff" is starting to become very expensive and I still havn't figured out what "Stuff" is yet !

From what I can gather the following will be there that I am aware of:-

YMJ - YMJ 681
Yorkie 'S' & Steady Eddy - XFX 125B
acespeed72 ? - AMU 136A
Christian Devereux & Rupert Ivey - LLY 206D

I'm looking forward to seeing Chritian and Ruperts Car as it has apparantly has a nut and bolt rebuild we'll see, thats assuming they don't bring Glynn Swifts Goodwood Car.

We are awaiting clarification if Master's are allowing competitors to run the new Swiftune cranks and rods in their engines in this series before committing, as John Hopwood has stated categorically they are illegal as far as Appendix K is concerned.

Evidently these components will allow the engines to produce a power advantage so if allowed we will be looking at the U2TC as an alternative so as not to require a different engine for a different series.

.....unless they agree to "standard crank engines to run at 1380cc to negate the disadvantage of course" ;)

Mike,

I will be interested to hear the outcome of that discussion in due course. It obviously becomes very confusing and potentially expensive for all involved as you have quite rightly stated previously :-) This is the grey areas around the edges of Appendix K rearing its head again, all I can think is that I havn't seen an eligibilty scruitineer on the past 2 years and even if I jad done, how often would they be delving inside what they can't see ???

The fact that you don't as of yet have a definitive answer on the rods and crank makes me nervous as to what their answer might be ?

I don't expect to be at the cutting edge of the field, I don't have a) The talent b) The budget, so just hope to enjoy taking part and being competitive enough to have a midfield tussle with someone and thats me happy. I guess the problems for me start when in its currect state my car can't even give me a midfield tussle as everyone moves on a step, then well where am I ??? I can't aford to keep upgrading car that regularly with that pace of development ! Then its possibly time to look where you race ?

Cheers,
Yorkie

Hi Yorkie,

The core problem for this sort of development is commercial interest but at two levels. My commercial interest is that I want to build a customer car that in the right hands it can be a race winner. That is essential in order to prove we can build a race winner.

The fact that strict rules concerning eligibility should prevail prevents the "professional" preparer from being advantaged beyond what a competent individual can achieve setting aside how many engine re-builds new tyres etc.. a paying customer may throw at his car.

The difficulties arise when a blind eye to developments outside of the rules occur and I question the purpose of allowing such situations. I admire Nick Swift's work and enterprise but would question, has he designed these components for engines not running to Appendix K which surely is a relatively small market, assuming they are not going to be allowed in Miglias?

If he is aiming these products at the Historic market, after all he ran such an engine in the Dart, then clearly this is a case of commercial interest dictating the rules, should they be allowed. After all, Mini racers have got by on the old style cranks since the 1275 was introduced. Eventually everyone will need these parts to remain competitive and all that happens is we spend a shed load more money, all move up the grid a bit further (still in our relative competitive positions) and then have illegal cars. I know Roger Wills ordered 5 new engines from Nick it will be interesting to know the spec. on these.

This issue is of such concern that my co-driver Paul Tarry, for whom one of our customer cars is destined, is speaking to me about selling it and looking for something else to race.

I am awaiting a reply to an e-mail I sent to Ron and will post the response, unless it gets discussed at the Goodwood test on Friday.

Mike
