Bathurst to honour Mini 50th anniversary

Post by mab01uk »

"The 50th anniversary of Mini’s Mount Panorama domination will be honoured with a special parade over the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 weekend.
The British marque famously filled the top nine positions in the 1966 Gallaher 500 with Bob Holden and Finn Rauno Aaltonen taking the honours.
The triumph will be replicated, albeit when nine contemporary race Minis join the drivers’ parade on Sunday morning prior to the start of Bathurst 1000.
Supercars drivers will then head the parade with the 54-strong field set to be driven around the 6.2km circuit in Mini Mokes.
The 83-year-old Holden will be at the tail of the parade aboard a new John Cooper Works Mini.
Included in the parade will be two works cars from 1967 and 1971 with the former once raced by 1964 Monte Carlo Rally winner Paddy Hopkirk.
The Minis will be painted in period colours with several liveried in the famous Castrol green, which was used in the 1966 Bathurst 500.
Prior to Sunday’s celebration, the race cars will be joined by a collection of classic Minis from across Australia that have made the trek to Mount Panorama for a parade lap at 1145 on Saturday."

Here's a replica of that Race Winning Cooper S, at the Motor racing Museum, Mt Panorama, Bathurst

The original race Winning Car was stolen a few years following this race and never recovered :o

On-car camera view of the Mini parade lap around the fantastic Mount Panorama street circuit at Bathurst, Australia taken yesterday before the V8 Supecar 1000 km race. Footgae courtesy of Freddo on the Ausmini forum. In front of the camera car is one the BMC Works rally cars resident in Australia - LRX828E.

I was actually invited to go over and race in this, but stupidly declined for various reasons.... :(

they had 35 minis all in one single marquee, it looked ace

my mate did send me the official shirt, so it does at least look as if I went!
should you wish, you can contact me on rich@minispares.com

Totally agree, ours look very standard in comparison. Some great stripey colour schemes there!

Also these photos by Danny Walters. He posted the link on the Ausmini forum so assume it's OK to post it here as well.

They are new 5.5x10 wheels specifically designed for historic racing (as you can go 1" wider than stock). There was a batch done by Dave Armstrong in the same dimensions in the past but not in commercial quantities from what I have read.

From another forum:
The wheels are designed with both Nb racers and road car guys in mind and pricing will be very reasonable.
Cooper S calipers will just clear without major grinding/mods.
The weight of the wheel is just 2.95kg so is the lightest alloy 5.5 ive weighed and only marginally off a magnesium minilite.
they should be in production and available in the coming months.

Hopefully this will work if you are accessing outside of Australia. The full race was broadcast on TV, with an interview with Holden and Aaltonen.
