Door hinge gaskets
Hi all,
bought a set of hinge gaskets, they seem to be quite thick, not sure what to do any recommendations? also should the hinges be sprayed separately or installed on the door and quarter panel?
cheers,
Cpr1

Re: Door hinge gaskets
I paint the hinges off the car as well as doors bonnet and boot lid then fit up afterwards, factory cars had all panels fitted so you could do either method

Re: Door hinge gaskets
I always think they look better with the gaskets unpainted. Makes me think of overspray on screen rubbers and light gaskets from a cheap blow over..
I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

Re: Door hinge gaskets
In our local factory, they fitted all the removable panels (including these gaskets), then painted the car. Not the wisest way, but can understand it from a production view point.

Re: Door hinge gaskets
I'd say painted as under the hinges when I stripped the doors was bare unpainted steel
which says the factory assembled the car then painted it

Re: Door hinge gaskets
While the factory may have painted all after assembly, I would not follow that course during a respray. Protect the door panel and spray the parts prior to assembly.
I also like the look of door hinge gaskets that are not painted. I had to replace a "stock" pair recently on the driver's door. I decided to cut my own from material sent to me by another Mini owner. Instead of the hard fiberboard gaskets I bought 10+ years ago I made the replacements out of high-hardness Nitrile rubber sheet with a molded in layer of cloth. The cloth keeps the rubber from "squishing out" of the joint. Cut with a sharp razor blade the edges look clean and I am pleased with the result.

Re: Door hinge gaskets
guess I should paint everything separately , then fit the doors and hinges, the problem is that they seem too thick, they were bought from minispares. anyone knows the thickness of the original ones.

Re: Door hinge gaskets
I do not have a measurement but I assume (from memory) that they are between 1 and 1.5 mm thick. If you are replacing the front and rear hinge gaskets at the same time it won't matter functionally and the cosmetic difference in thickness would be minor.

Re: Door hinge gaskets
The gaskets I have on a set of NOS hinges are 0.86MM thick where as the Mini Spares ones I have are 1.62MM thick.
I can't say I've ever had trouble with the MS ones but they are noticeably different when side by side.

Re: Door hinge gaskets
I would think if their NOS at least 35 odd years old they would have dried out and shrunk quite a bit? just like any paper gasket does? Besides a little extra girth does nothing but make the doors easier to close on the awful door rubbers we get these days!!Tupers wrote:The gaskets I have on a set of NOS hinges are 0.86MM thick where as the Mini Spares ones I have are 1.62MM thick.
