Renovating original bakalite steering wheel

Post by minitravellerman »

I have the original bakalite steering wheels from both my '62 Mini-Minor and '64 Traveller, but both are showing their age with wear and a few marks. The shine has also gone many moons ago.

Question is - what is the best way to renovate these. I have tried to respray them but the paint insists on peeling off. I'm assuming it is the primer I'm using, as I have the wheel well cleaned and free from any dirt, oil etc. The primer I've been using is plastic primer. Is there a more suitable primer that would be needed for bakalite??

Thanks folks.

I've already replaced them for much nicer items but still very period. Just want to have the originals looking nice in the cabinets!
