SPIT WEBER CARBS/MANIFOLDS

Anyone using split webers? They seem to be the carb of choice for historic stage rallying, had a look at three cars a couple of weeks back, some using Maniflow inlets and another with welded ie. Abingdon type inlets done by SMMC which looked very good. All cars had standard bulkheads.

AS I have used pretty much every carb type over the years except splits, and always fancied a set, then this is what my rebuilt Orangebox is going to run :D Just wondered what other people are running, i'm leaning towards the Maniflow as I have a Maniflow LCB to use, so in theory :? fitment/sealing would be best with these.

I used a set of splits on one of my hillclimbers. They definitely gave a more consistent mixture than a single one & as you say look super cool too

The ones I used were a Longman set, but the Maniflow ones seem to be pretty much a copy of these, dimension wise.

The SMMC sets are great if you have to use the (crappy) standard manifold, but it means using (& butchering) 2 complete carbs, where as with a maniflow / Longman set you still have 1 "normal" 45 and a 1/2.

In my opinion split webers if permitted are the best setup you can have for motorsport and they are so easy to keep right. I was working at a friends rally Mini last week (ORX 76F) which has split webers with a nice manifold made by Simon Drew which gives good bulkhead clearance. When I did rallycross 30 years ago I had a cylinder head and manifold that used two complete standard 40mm Webers. Elgin Greer still has those Webers. I seen that same setup on a 998cc Cooper at a show in England in 2013 :?:

Splits do provide an advantage over other carburetors , a well set up 1293 wth a 649 cam will pull from 1200 rpm with the correct engine spec .
The biggest problem with them is people don,t build the engine to suit them and don,t know how to set them up correctly.
SMMC have build rally engine with splits for -

Al Vines. CRX 89 B
Peter Horsburgh 277 BRX
Peter Barker \ Pat Walker 977 ARX
Les Allfrey 3444 DG

Also have build highly tuned road engines with splits for Peter Hicks and James Palmer who both post on here .

If anyone fancies casting some new manifolds, I have wooden patterns which I had made back in the late 80's . We did a run of around 10 pairs which all sold.
