Speedo again
Sorry, I know this topic has been covered however I remain a bit confused on what speedo might go with the sender I have here. I have a June 1964 1275 Cooper S and the correct speedo for my car is the one in the left of the picture. It is labelled SN4417/18A. The thing that is strange is that it has a voltage stabilizer attached to the back of it which I thought was a 1965 change? The sending unit I have is shown in the picture between the two speedos. The sender is a Smiths FTS2330/00.
I have the common dilemma, which is the combination of this sender and this speedo fuel level gauge read backward. I am pretty sure this confirms that this sender is designed for a non-stabilized fuel gauge. I disassembled all of this stuff around 25 years ago and I am having trouble mating some of the parts so that everything works together. The gauge on the right is yet another Cooper speedo I had laying around and is just shown as a comparison. Is it possible that the correct speedo is the one on the right? The right speedo is labelled SN4479/22.
Will this work if I just remove the voltage stabilizer? What do you guys think?
Input appreciated.
Gary

Re: Speedo again
As Gareth posted...change took place around Aug/Sept 64.
The speedos...
One on the left is for the 1275 S's after the change..sept 64 till end of MK1 production. Has the correct configuration of stabilizer, fuel gauge and an oil filter warning lamp.
Speedo on the right is for early 1275 S's. This speedo shouldn't have the voltage stabilizer. It does have the correct fuel gauge

Re: Speedo again
I can't add much to what has been said. The voltage stabiliser on the early speedo has been attached to the nut which holds the earth cable. As Dermott says, it does not belong. The sender is the first type to be retained with a locking ring and is a 12V one like the earlier 6 screw type.

Interesting to note that both Gareth and Dermott have visited my place as well as Chuck Heleker who alerted me to this post. It's a small (Mini) world.

Re: Speedo again
Thanks very much. So the consensus is that the correct speedo for my June 1964 S is actually the one on the right then. (just making sure one more time. And then do not use the stabilizer but the gauge is correct?360gts wrote:As Gareth posted...change took place around Aug/Sept 64.

I hope this is correct...

Re: Speedo again
So you are saying that it is not the same as an early 1275S as 360gts pointed out?scott6058 wrote:The one on the right is a 1071 speedo and the left one is a proper 1275.
Is the one on the right correct for a very early 1275S? About the only thing I know is one of these two came on my car originally...

Both speedos are for a 1275...just look at the shift points.Gary Schulz wrote:So you are saying that it is not the same as an early 1275S as 360gts pointed out?scott6058 wrote:The one on the right is a 1071 speedo and the left one is a proper 1275.

A 970/1071 speedo will have different shift points. (70MPH at third to fourth)
perhaps you could check the inner dials to see which numbers are there.
Pretty sure though both are 1275 speedos. The one on the right should be the one you need for a 64 1275 (without the stabilizer)

Re: Speedo again
Thanks 360gts! I wired up the speedo on the right with the sender minus the stabilizer and it works perfectly. Not sure why someone stuck that stabilizer on there but it operates normally now. Many thanks for the clarification/help. I also took a look at some other documentation and it seems to corroborate that the gauge on the right is the early and correct 1275S item.360gts wrote:Both speedos are for a 1275...just look at the shift points.Gary Schulz wrote:So you are saying that it is not the same as an early 1275S as 360gts pointed out?scott6058 wrote:The one on the right is a 1071 speedo and the left one is a proper 1275.

All is well (at least for now!)
