I'm currently stripping the 22G68 gearbox for my 997 Cooper all was good until I came to remove the bolt on the selector for 1st/2nd the head snapped by putting hardly any leverage on the spanner now all I'm left with is a short length of bolt which I'm unable to get a stud extractor on due to the restrictive space, Any help or tips would be most appreciated.

can you not weld a nut onto the remains of the thread? - access will be ok through the diff hole

You should - just - be able to slide the shaft down far enough to be able to work on the screw through the opening for the diff, but there won't be much room. You could try to drill the screw but you'll need a long series drill bit and be aware, those screws are on the hard side. It's likely you'll damage the selector fork in the process. You'll also want to grip the shaft with some vice grips to stop it from turn while yo do this.

If you have another selector shaft, you can always cut the shaft.

Others may have some other ideas, this wouldn't be the first.

Did you back off the jam nut before backing the grub screw out? If the jam nut is still on the screw a spot of weld above it should allow you to back it out with the jam nut. I expect the heat will help as well. Steve (CTR)
