Is taking the top arms off the only solution to getting these out?

yes it is

You can always cut the turret top off the subframe

As Rich says, you HAVE to take the top arm out. No doubt someone will claim to have done it without, but it's MUCH easier doing it right.

Got the old one levered out but no way are the red spot cones going in.
I pulled the top arm pin half way to give more wiggle room.

What does surprise me is how the car has sagged even after not driven 3 months. How would you date the old ones? There is now a pronounced flat where the rubber contacts the hi lo.

Jim Brindle can get em out with the arms in place - watched him loads of times but i can never do it - must be a secret method ..

in the interests of research I swopped the doughnuts in the rear (front) frame of my gtm on Saturday night (rock and roll life or WHAT!)

there is no way on this earth that they would come out with the top arms in place as they where nearly flat

it only took just under two hours to whip the top arms out, swop the doughnuts and reassemble - I don't know why anyone would waste time huffing and puffing and levering away at the frame or the doughnuts to try and 'save' time.

the gtm has no inner wings or rad to get in the way, but instead has a serious pain in the arse engine steady that covers one of the compression tool access holes.

Btw Rich the red spot rubbers have improved the car no end. When the plastic recovers I'll be getting more stuff, need an exhaust.

on replacing them too......You really need to be aware of your hands when the doughnut is fully compressed to get the arm, ball and trumpet back in as very occasionally with 'old' ones the centre thread has taken on some rust and ageing. BANG!!
