combining 22g1128 magic wand and 1300gt engine and gears?
Good Evening,
After having the bodyshell almost bulld up, I am turning my attention to the engine. i would like to be sure on the following after reading many posts about the 1300gt engine, 22g1128 gearbox and 1070 sa crankshaft
Currently I have an 850 4 sync magic wand of which I would like to maintain the magic wand gearshift.
I have bought a 1300gt engine and would to use this as a basis for my build.
First question:
I would like to use the close ratio gears and diff ratio from the 1300gt. Must I transfer everyting into the 22g1128 gearbox or Can I transfer the lever by using shaft 88G233 or 88G553 (non-remote housing), button 2A3467, spring 2A3390 and plate/pad 22A1832 directly to the 1300gt gearbox to change it to magic wand shift?
.
Next question:
To get a nice engine spec I would like to use the "stoker kit" from specialist compinents with sa crankshaft and speciial connecting rods, will this fit to the 1300gt block? http://twinkam.co.uk/epages/191f6b26-60 ... ucts/SC350
Besides a swifttune sw8 camshaft kit, I will add a stage 3 and 1,5 rockers in a later stage.
Thanks!
Jeroen

those stroker kits are a nice thing as you don't have to chop so much off the top of the block.
however, chopping a standard 1275 block, either a series, or a plus is no issue at all for fitting a sa1070 crank into.
ive done it loads of times and run everything from +20 to 73.5mm bore with no issues
never, ever done a head gasket in one

Not my business to ask why, but paying £833 to reduce the capacity by 200cc,
and probably reduce the power output by a similar amount would seem to be
an expensive modification for a negative improvement.
It won't be a proper 1071 'S' replica because the stroke will be slightly longer,
but it will probably rev better than the 1275cc.
Unless the engine is being used in sub-1100cc class racing, of course, in which
case it will be a decent engine, but one which will only be any good until it needs
a rebore.

I can tell that you have never enjoyed a SA1100 cranked engine.......
they rev fantastic, smooth, sweet unfussed engine, sure, they don't make the grunt of a 1275, but that's where the extra 1500 rpm come in!
you can gear them low and rev them high
my gtm is a real gem with its engine

Re: combining 22g1128 magic wand and 1300gt engine and gears
The SA 1100 engines do have an appeal. I have run many of them & prefer them over a similar 1275 unit. The power they give is MUCH smoother & cars with these engines are far more relaxing to drive. The reduction in performance is no where near what you suggest either as these units will comfortably rev past what a similar 1275 one will. As Rich has also suggested, reliability of these shorter stroke engines knocks the long stroke 1275 engine sideways.
I guess it is horses for courses, but I have always preferred the short-ish stroke of the 1071 & the SA1100 over the rough (sounds & feels like it's going to let go) power of a 1275 unit.

Re: combining 22g1128 magic wand and 1300gt engine and gears
thank you all for the replies.
the reason I want to do this conversion is torque snd not high horsepower. in combination with an Sw8 camshaft kit, I believe my engine will have the best of both worlds. Relaxed cruising and when needed there is power in all rev areas.
Great to hear Mark and Rich that the crank will fit. how about the magic wand? Change only the magic wand parts or put everything in the 1128 case?
Thanks!

Re: combining 22g1128 magic wand and 1300gt engine and gears
My post wasn't intended to be critical, just an observation...
I've run pretty much every configuration of 'A' Series, apart from
short-stroke large bore.
850, 998, 1098, 1242, 1275, 1330, 1380, 1480cc
This along with various camshafts, heads and different combinations
of 'box ratios and diffs...
I am sure that the engine will be excellent in the application that
it will be used in! I agree that there is a lot of appeal in a small
engine that revs - Great fun...

Ian, You must try one one day, I am sure you will be amazed.
And don't worry, I (& I am sure Rich) didn't interpret your comment as criticism.
As will all things Mini there are many ways to skin the same cat.

Re: combining 22g1128 magic wand and 1300gt engine and gears
I'm in full agreement with Rich & Mark that the A-series 1275cc engine is not a very smooth running engine. In fact, nobody has yet explained to me why the longer stroke 1098cc engine runs smoother than the 1275cc? Many years ago I used for motorsport a 1275cc block and Gordon Allen 76.20mm crank and trust me no 1293cc engine could smell it.

Re: combining 22g1128 magic wand and 1300gt engine and gears
I'd move all gears over to the 1128 box. Doing the cover only while it can and is done it's only because they don't have what you do right there. I'd look real hard at the gears in both boxes. The 1300 tranny takes a beating compared to 998/850 boxes. Depending in CWP the wide ratio may work better. Steve (CTR)
I have a Cooper S block run with a blown head gasket torching the 2/3 wall. It has all steel caps 4 bolt center line bored. I have a 970 crank if I could find some 6 inch rods I know what I'd build don't know what red line I'd use.
