If you mean when you turn on ignition then it's probably the fuel pump

If you have a mini with a push button start, the ignition switch only has 2 positions. Ignition and fuel pump off and on.

If you turn the key, you will hear the fuel pump before you press the start button

Really? I mean the fuel pump is aside the left rear tire right beneath the tank, and the noise doesn't seem to come from there, also It is kind of a new noise, anyways, if it is the fuel pump does it means it's time to change it or is it normal?
thanx for the replies

The fuel pump ticking is very easily heard when sitting in the drivers seat.
I always listen for it ticking (and then slowing to a stop) before I start the car to ensure the float chamber is full.

Nickacb just disconnect the wire feeding the pump , then listen again , EASY.

If you have an after market electronic pump it will 'tick' all the time.

Yes, I remember when customes released my Mini I had to replace the pump because it seemed to have had the original one (or at least a very old one) completely useless so I put an after market but I don't remember it ticking then, but based on your responses is pretty obvious the pump is making the noise. I replaced its hoses this weekend cause they were all craked up and massive leaking and would have been a great idea to unplug it also and confirm what is is almost certain.
Unfortunately as you may have guessed, I don't know nothing about mechanics and I'm just hoping I connected the hoses correctly, I mean I attached the hose that comes from the tank in the "in" plug of the pump and the other end to the "out" plug, which I guess is right.
thanx for all your help.
