850 water pump replacement or refurbishment?

Morning everyone,

I have a 850 Mini, build date of Dec 61, I have recently noticed a loss of coolant, after a bit of investigation this is coming from the end of the water pump and there is also play when I move the fan.

So I need to change the water pump, I have looked through 26 pages of the forum searching and are still unsure what the best route to go is, do I just take it off and send it to get reconditioned by an expert, do I try and recondition it myself with fitting new internals from an alloy one to the cast iron one? Or just buy an alloy one and fit this - although there is modification required to do this (albeit not sure how much modification and whether you can do this with the engine in situ).

The car is very original and as such I would quite like to be able to keep the cast iron water pump but would welcome peoples views and own experiences.

Also as I am replacing/re-furbing the water pump I will buy new water pipes and a fan belt, is there anything else I should be looking at changing whilst I have the rad off? and where is the best place to buy these?- I would like them to look original.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Andy
