Can someone please show me a photo of where the horn is located in the engine bay of an Mk 1 Mini Cooper.
A far as I can tell they were mounted on the subframe?

The horn mounts on the front panel in the top left hand corner of the grill hole as you look at it. On all MK1s there are 2 studs welded into the front panel pointing forward, this is teh same for ALL variants.
See pic late on in the thread here

You can just see the horn in front of the starter solenoid on this picture.

So they used the 2 studs but with the later type (9F?) horn?
I have the HF1849 horn in my van.
Thanks Mark.

& the reason I ask is a friend of mine has asked about his CKD Cooper. I would imagine BMC Australia made a few mods, here is the photo of his engine bay, you can see the different type horn bracket.

Good point, but the positioning is the same.

You'll need to see if that was the original mount or if, as often happened, one or more of the factory bolts had broken off and been replaced by the top mounting.

I have spoken to a number of owners of Aussie cars now and have had a look at an original CKD Aussie Cooper. The horns on Aussie cars (both High & Low) were mounted on the front subframe, one below the starter motor and the other just to the left of the oil filter. This carried on right into our Mini Deluxe and Mini K until the Mini Clubman was released in 1971 here, but with just a single horn.
The Cooper S had the horn mounted on the bonnet slam panel.
Thank you all for your input.
Cheers
David.

None of my coopers or 850s even have holes on the top panel

Sheepishly it was me who enquired
I built the car 30years ago and it never occurred to me that the early cars didnt set the precedent for the later esses.
so I just fitted a single 9H.
After discussing early horns with 850man and cooper997 I was under the impression I should have had an HF1849 but no for australian market cars.
Anyway i had a feel around and the holes are there as thought on the original subframe.
I should have twin 9Hs to make changing the oil filter more of a challenge!!
