Cooper S homologation 5028

Hello everybody,

a probably easy question made me think and search about it for a while but couldn't find a satisfiying answer.
The Cooper S was homolodated in 1966 with the homologation #5028. The last add on was made in October 1970. Production of the Cooper S was stopped in June 1971.

Until when was the homologation valid for group 2? I found value of 4 and 7 years.

Thanks a lot!
Regards Philipp

5 years after the year in which production ended.
That only changed in comparatively recent years. (5 year rule applied to rwd Escort too in 1985)

Following the appendix K rules, it does not matter. You will need a MK 1,2 or 3 1275S and have only to decide the period. That means, with a MK1 you have the choice to use period G2 and run a dry suspension, wings, e.g. But a MK3 will remain a car from 1970 on. Just to add. There is another homologation sheet for the 1275S, the number 1300, with less weight but less additions too.

and there are of course earlier Cooper S papers for the Appendix J that ended 31.12.65.

Incidently, 7 years was the homologation expiry that eventually replaced 5 years but I have never heard of 4 years and have no knowledge (or interest!) in any more modern variations.

Hi guys. Sorry only just seen this post. I did the 1975 RAC Rally in a 1970 Mark 2 Cooper S and was told at the time that it was the last year of homologation for the car. I don't think any Coooper S's took part in International Rallies after that RAC in 1975. Just my twopenneth!

Bill Barton was entered in a Cooper S on the 76 RAC (all other Mini entries were 1275GTs). If production ceased in 71, that would align with the homologation expiry as 31.12.76. (I did the 75 and 76 RACs)
I agree it was generally believed at the time that 75 was the last chance to use a Cooper S on the RAC (hence the Terry Kaby/Bob Freeborough entry). I had considered entering mine.
The "end of fifth year after production ceased " is fact for homologation expiry then. What I can't confirm is date production ceased (production of a vehicle complying with the homologation papers, not one with the same model name but of a different spec).
I believe I have seen something somewhere about the Barton entry being the last time a Cooper S was used on the RAC but I can't actually recall seeing it on the event that year and without other confirmation the possibility exists that it was entered in error.
The possibility also always exists that a car not correctly homologated could start an International Rally. If it didn't finish or didn't win anything it might not be picked up. Pre-event scrutineering is mainly about safety for the less visible entrants, not eligibility. From photos I've seen of the Kaby car, it didn't comply with Gp2 regs as far as bulkhead mods are concerned...

Mk 2 S production ceased in January or February 1970, Mk 3 S in June 1971.
