Brake proportioning valve

After spinning my Mk1 twice (the first time into a hedge) under heavy braking, and mostly recently over the weekend, it dawned on me that twice must be more than just bad luck.

Quite easy to diagnose..the PO has removed the proportioning valve and fitted a plain tee piece

The first time it happened I thought it was just over exuberance/inexperience (and, ahem, being out with an Integrale and a Mk1 and Mk2 Escort :o ) but now all is revealed! (and I feel less of a plonker, but I should have checked it out after the first incident - which cost me a new front end and sub frame)

I presume the solution is to fit a Minispares adjustable valve?

..check your valves out there and go easy!!

Jon,

Why not fit a standard proportioning valve?

Also worth checking if PO has fitted different (ie smaller) rear brake cylinders.

What brakes are you running up front?

cooper s brakes on the front, no servo. Not sure on the pads.

I did wonder about the rear cylinders....will check that.

I guess the only reasons for an adjustable valve is that I can set it to what feels rights. The Mini is going to be a quasi competition/fast road car and I plan to do a bit of road rallying and perhaps some hill climbs

Smaller rear cylinders will reduce the braking effort on the rear , when you fit the prop valve you need to make sure the rear wheel cylinder size is the right diameter to match the valve cut in

Also you need to ensure the fade characteristics of the friction material are broadly the same otherwise as you increase the brake temps if the front fades before the rears you will end up with the same problem .... the vehicle will become unstable and liable to swop ends on you which is difficult to catch with such a short wheelbase

Fit the smallest rear cylinders you can. 1/2".
