I have been on a roll lately. In the last couple of weeks I have built and shipped four trannys. I have three more on the bench now. Two of the units were fitted with 3.1 CWPs. Each required removing the double ball bearing retainer and using a puller to remove the pinion. One required a new 3rd motion shaft. I had 5 NOS ones on hand and the first one I picked would not accept the pinion. I guess I should not be surprised that of the 5 shafts the area where the pinion fits varied as much a .007 in dia.
I retain all tranny parts I remove and replace. The 3.1 pinions would fit less than half the 3rd motion shafts I have on hand. Blueing the shafts and pinion bore and fitting it appears the splines were not broached deep enough. Just wonder id anyone else has noticed this? Steve (CTR)

Re: 3.1 CWP issue?
I've so far found all the late 3rd motion shafts 'oversize', both those I've removed from boxes and most (all?) of the new ones. Not just tight on the Pinion splining (though in that regards they haven't been too bad) but more so on the bearing mount. I'm not able to narrow down from what year model this has cropped up, but it would be around 1990 on, maybe a little earlier. I grind them back to a spot on 1.000" dia.
Note in regards to the Pinions, they (should) actually mount on the bottom of the spline not to the OD of the shaft.
