I just obtained a set of these wanting a refurb bit I'm now wondering if they'll fit under the wing without arch extensions
I'm currently undecided about whether or not to upgrade from the drums to S discs. I presume they fit under on drums, but what about s discs?

I had a set on my very first MINI...a 77 with drums all around. They fit nicely, just covered up......they will not fit over discs without a flare....unless there is a different positive off-set out there

That's a shame. Also managed to pick up a set of what I suspected were Cooper S 4.5 Rims needing paint. Turns out they're reverse..
Not having much luck with this wheel lark.
Unless I stick with the drums I suppose, which could be interesting with a warmed up 1100.

You know my view, I'd fit them anyway. Lots of cars about on D1's and reverse rims with S discs and no arches. I like that look.

Nothing wrong with poperly adjusted drum brakes!
I used to auto cross a very warmed up 1100 in a MINI on Drums. It performed remarkably well.
The important thing is to have them adjusted properly and equally.

Quite a few competition drivers preferred drums to disks in the 60's. The drums were (are) a lot lighter & as long as they are adjusted properly work well. They can be prone to fade after repeated use though.
Just 1 racer that seems OK on drums.

I have a set of 5Js with 165 tyres and running with discs they do need flares.

They'll only protrude a small amount. Run them that way or is there some anal rule in Blighty that requires flares.

Sticking out the body is not a MOT failure so therefore not against road law just looks a bit Boyracer

X2 on that, I ended up fitting minifins (the original ones) this allows me to stop quickly twice, instead of the usual once

oh and they fit under the guards OK too

It might not be an MoT failure, but it is definitely a part of road law.

MoT failure on this side of the Irish Sea - I think you can have up to 1/4" past the bodywork but after that it's a no-no!

That IVA book is a disconcerting.. Reading through it seems to suggest that a vehicle that has an engine swapped from another previously registered vehicle AND another item e/g transmission, is required to have an IVA.. In the case of a vast amount of Minis, that means an IVA?!
On the other hand, I read the bit to do with rebuilt vehicles...
f. Rebuilt Vehicle
A vehicle that
is a previously UK registered vehicle to which the Secretary of State is required by regulation to assign a vehicle identification number, and does
not fall within the definition of an “Amateur Built” vehicle or “Vehicle manufactured using parts of a registered vehicle,” and has been rebuilt using
a replacement chassis or integral chassis/body which is of the same design and construction as that of the original vehicle and which was supplied for the purpose without having been previously used, or previously formed part of a registered vehicle. Evidence will be required to
meet this definition
I read that to mean that if you imported a shell from abroad, second hand, you could potentially rebuild a vehicle legally with a second hand shell. Or have I missed something?

This is why when you notify the DVLA of an engine swap or change in capacity they ask for an invoice or receipt from a responsible company for the work carried out.

And if you do it yourself (on the basis it's not exactly difficult..!)? What then? Been a while since I dabbled in this sort of thing

You do what some have done in the past & get your desk top publishing programme out & create a bill with the requisite details itemised. Or get a mate with a garage to do you a dodgy invoice.
Not that I would recommend such a practice.
