Mk1 Interior Light

Hello Chaps
I need an interior light but when doing some research it looks like there are two different styles as shown below (pic only for reference purposes)
On the back plate casing one style seems to have pointed ends (bottom in pic) while the other has flat ends (top in pic).
The question is which is the correct one for a Mk1 Mini, or are they both correct and it comes down to year made ?

The change point from the black metal switch to the white plastic one was around September 64.
I've seen a couple of pre 64 cars here in Portugal with the following item fitted:
But don't know the fitting criteria between the 2 types with black switches.

You can exclude the white plastic button type.
As for which of the other 2 types, lets wait for further replies.

Hi guys,
I recall hearing or reading the light with the white plastic toggle was introduced into production mid to late '65 but it seems that the other type with black sliding switch was still being fitted to some cars in '66. I would say '64 or earlier would definately have the sliding switch style.

Al

Parnell states in his book the change point being September 64. This interior light change is listed under the changes by chassis number and the Cooper chassis numbers when the change ocurred, are listed. I don't have the copy of my book at the moment, but someone with the bible can easily check this.

Found one of the sliding metal switch type in the garage this afternoon. Excellent condition but missing the domed cover and rather discoloured. Anyone know how to bleach bakelite??
Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian,
I don't think you'll clean it white again. The housings are very fragile and inclined to crumble too, so be careful. The best solution is probably to paint it with something. I've used lacquer, but vinyl paint could be used.

Ok, worked it out. It should have the pointed ends on the base unit.
Found the reminents of the original light unit in the car when removing all the interior. I say remains as its prett much disintegrated and fallen apart. The dirt mark outline on the headlining was the confirmirmation I needed though.

Hello.
I don't like starting new topics so i hijacked this older one.
I seem to be missing my interior courtesy light from my Authi Mini Van, that mounts in the middle at the rear edge of the headlining.
Could you post a photo of what should be fitted?
Is it the same lamp unit as the saloon Mini's, on the inside of the B-pillar?
Thank you.

Just to revive this thread a bit, rather than starting a new one. My 1967 SDL has an interior light that looks like its been smashed, but maybe it's disintegrated due to age, it's always been like this since I bought it in 2002. I was told the earlier metal switch light was too early for my car but it has the wiring at the doors for a switch to operate the interior light. Would the metal switch be to allow you to have the lights come on when the door opens or just have it off, similar to modern cars? The switches aren't there but the wiring is and it's tucked into the door rubbers. I assume it didn't come from the factory like this? I've attached a few pictures. It wasn't until I was taking the pictures yesterday that I noticed the remnants of the old light has the metal switch.
