850cc in-line engine

Post by Pandora »

Hi Folks,

Apparently A35 vans were available with an in-line 850cc engine. Anyone know anything about these engines? is spec' as per early Minis?

The block is clearly marked with a cast in '850' in the usual place where the larger ones have '950'

quick check suggests originally 948cc then back to offering either option 848cc or 1098cc to end of production.

Probably wouldnt have bothered James Hunt much....

I have a complete one that is in an A30 doner car I own.

61 Morris 850s here in Australia had the same block drillings as the rear wheel drive engines. (threaded oil pick up hole & rear main upper casting holes) The "850" is in a different position that normal as well.

Is it just the angle of the photo or is that an ultra thin flange block too?
