1962 mini ha ha

Post by redrobbo »

Hi guys,
just thought i let everyone see the start of the restoration of my Sept 62 Austin Mini, bit of history first though
My Uncle bought it from a nurse at the hospital he worked at. Not sure what year he bought but apparently when he went to look at it, the drivers door fell off lol. He bought it for a fiver, yes a fiver, and him and his best pal, who was a mechanic put a new battery on it and it started first time. They took it back home and started repairs.
It was the time when making mini's look sporty was all the rage so it from red to orange, a bigger engine, wheels etc.
In 1987 he gave it to me as an 18th birthday present, and my first car. I drove it for a while before starting a restoration on it, but then life and 2 kids got in the way blah blah blah........
Now the kids have grown up, no mortgage, no wife (yipee!!!), so I now have the finaces to do it up! So in February I dragged it out of my mum's garage where it had been sat for 27 years (ish). Dragged it down to mine and completely stripped it before being sent off for Acid Dipping at Surface Processing in Dudley. It's back from dipping now, which has thrown up a few surprises!!!! Firstly, the floor was worse than I thought so I have ordered complete floor from M Machine and I'm now awaiting it's arrival to start the first phase of reconstruction. Secondly, it's had a little bump in it's life .... a repair to the drivers side rear quarter panel. And thirdly, I've found a chasis number on it, which I had never spotted before, on the quadrant panel between the flitch panel and the main crossmember. Right inbetween the fuse box and the voltage regulator. Which is nice coz now I know it is a genuine chasis number. Here is some pictures of it and I'll keep everyone posted of it progress. Wish me luck!!!

Many thanks for the warm welcome gents & ladies.
Glass sun roof club lol, the triple X sunroof looked great in the day driving towards you in the popped up position but i've got to block that hole up now  Not sure if its worth anything, maybe ebay will let me know one day, will all help towards the cost of the restoration. As for the period mods they will be going to. It's going to how it was when it was new.
Yes thats a Rover 400 Tourer SE in bermuda blue in one of the pics. I've had it coming 11 years now. It came down line in the last 2 weeks of production. They only made 200 or 250 in that colour and i've only seen another 2 in all that time. Accord to the "how many left" site there only 36 left, 26 taxed and 10 sorned. How many are in that coulour i wonder? Future classic me thinks.
As for me been a union rep, not a cat in bloody hells chance  , my mini is red, my nick name is Robbo and im an ex mg rover employee.
Any advise, tips etc though on doing the body shell would be welcomed.

UPDATE TIME.
well its all mounted upon the roll over jig i purchased. Im quite impressed really, i can spin my mini ha ha in a wooden shed with a 6ft height clearence with the roof beams :D.
I ordered a new floor from m machine which came last week. Must admit, fedex handle their parcels really well................not. Came with a damaged corner, not the first i've seen mentioned on this forum but can sort it out.
The old floor is now cut out. The hardest part was around the rear passenger companion box's. On the passengers side there were 5 layers on steel to negotiate
Today i offered up the new floor, with the help of my brother, and had to get the grinder out again to just trim certain sections down. The fit looks good on first impressions though.
Im just waiting now for one or two, ok ok, alot of repair section panels to arrive  before i offer it up again.
Onward and upwards they say ;)

UPDATE 2............

Hello again peeps,
well the new floor is now in position, its also tacked and bolted in :)
The M Machine floor is a decent fit. I did have problems with the rear companion box's though. When the floor was offered up, the box's were holding the heal board area of the floor away from the boot floor by around 3-4mm meaning the new floor aint quite as deep as the old one, soooooo out came the companion box's. Were hoping to leave them in but it wasn't to be
I've also fitted the passanger door step. The door has yet to be offered up, so lets hope it fits.
All the panels i ordered from M Machine have arrived. They also seem good quility/fit when offered up. The metal thickness is good to.
Well thats it for now, catch you soon.

Those one piece floors really are a godsend. They certainly save loads of hassle and fill a big gaping hole quickly.
The project is coming along a treat. 8-)

Looking good!

You would have thought it was worth someone importing a batch of floors into Aus wouldn't you.

Those floors are fine for getting a car back on the road but if your going for a full resto our Australian cars have a channel (similar but not the same as an mpi) on both sides of the floor for the hydro pipes. This is what I'm struggling with at the moment.

there are front sections available for the Aus built mini's, with the "hump" for the hydro pipes.

its probably just not worth getting the one piece floor imported to Aus, as its still easy to get a rust free MK1 here.

Hi guys,
oh a rust free mk1 mini would be such a dream here in U.K. lol.
The rebuild is starting to stall because im struggling to find a drivers door and a complete rear subframe.
Obviously i need them to make sure all the gaps are correct before i permanently weld everything up.
They were stolen from out my mom's garage, when? i don't know.
The rear subframe was all built up, radius arms, pipes, fuel pump etc and ready to fit. I rebuilt it 20 odd years ago so only really needed to replace the wheel cylinders so when i found them missing.......................grrrrrrrrrrrrr, the upset dont measure.
So im busy scouring the net for them.
Onwards and upwards as they say.

its a shame that we are so far away, I have a set of doors that would be correct for your car sitting here in the shed. that came of my early 63 CKD car.
