Throttle spindle play on SU's

Post by rolesyboy »

Hi All. I have a pair of SUs I am just rebuilding with a kit from Burlen. I have a very small amount of play in the throttle spindle if I wiggle it in the carb body. Would anybody be able to indicate what is deemed acceptable? When you rotate the butterfly to the open position there is a mm of movement side to side although I reckon this is fine. Cheers. Mark

The Axial (side to side) movent you describe is fine, what you don't want is Radial (up and down) movement.

Cheers Ken. I have the bushes but haven't got the faintest idea of who/how to fit the b'strds. Trying to avoid sending them to Burlen if possible as want them done ASAP.
Thanks for the offer. And yes you're my favourite...

You have the drill out the bodies to take the spindle bush, best done on a mill for accuracy. Make sure you drill just deep enough to take the bushes from each side of the body, don't drill all the way through the body or you'll end up with a high tickover as the air rushes around the gap at the end of the bush! happens a lot according to the guy at Burlens.

Thanks for the advice Bob. Are the bushes regarded press fit? Do they need reaming afterwards??
I haven't got the foggiest idea and need to communicate this with the machine shop. (I am fairly certain that i would have ended up with them drilled right through had you not mentioned that so thanks)
