Odometers.... or Mileometers, whatever you want to call them...

It seems to be a ritual that every 10,000 miles I have to take my
speedo out and unjam the mileometer. Well, not quite every time,
but enough times that it just feels this way!

Have I been singled out for special treatment, or does anyone
else here suffer from this problem?

After each unit has done this two or three times, I end up paying
good money for a new speedo, just so I can transplant the innards
into my old one with a nicer face.

It's something to do with that "grabber" thing and the ratchet wheel
that is made out of cottage cheese.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ian

Chances are it'll be the nylon 'pusher' lever that is worn and it jumps the toothed sprocket of the odometer drum when trying to turn over a lot of wheels.

I have cannibalised other speedos for unworn levers and that always seems to cure the problem on the speedos I've had problems with in the past.

Not sure if new ones are available from someone like Speedy Cables ?

I have the same trouble as the OP.

I suspect its the 60 year old grease on the numbers spindle thats gone dry.

I fixed three just recently....it is indeed that silly plastic arm that gets worn.
I've used a very small file to even out the worn bit....then use a little heat to bend the arm in the direction it needs to go....usually left and down a little.....then the numbers may need a little help by hand initially.....then working fine. I did spray in a little silicon lube as well

I haven't taken it to bits yet, maybe one of the others here has
a photo?

I'll try to get a photo tonight and post up if someone else hasn't already done so.

Here's a photo of an early silver face speedo innards.

The offending item is painted gold with the spring attached.

The arms on the early speedos are metal but do the same thing as the later, nasty plastic ones.

Hope this helps.
