Remote Gearboxes

Advice required please, new to Mk1 having spent years playing with 90's Minis.

Suspect this has been asked before but would welcome some help....

Have a 65 Austin Mk1 and after all the bodywork is sorted I will be fitting a Remote Box.

I rushed into buying a remote Gearbox 22G1128 (listed as Mini!) and upon more research inc. on the Mk1 performance website it looks like I have an 1100/1300 Gearbox as it has a Sandwich plate remote type diff housing.
It came with two free(!) linkages 22G222 and I also have a 22G77 plus what I believe to be a correct Mini version 22A250 as this has the 4 bolt method of fixing.

I understand the 22G1128 will fit with a matching sandwich type remote if the mount is changed for a Mini one (need to tap some holes?) but would prefer to use the Mini remote. Can the diff housing be changed to use the 4 bolt rather than sandwich plate or should I be getting another Box?

Still to get hold of the bracket to mount the remote rubber mount to the floor, any suggestions?

It's a bit hit and miss as the castings are machined with diff cover bolted on, if too much misalignment it won't seal properly, but nothing to lose by trying a mini rear diff cover on the box to see how good a fit it is.

Been lots of discussion about this topic in the past.
I have used the Austin 1100/1300 setup .
If you want to go this route you will need to do a mod at the rear end of the 1100 remote housing.
I used a piece of 1/8" flat steel between the rubber mount and the remote housing.
You drill a hole in the center..that will bolt the plate to the rubber mount...then, you can use two countersunk bolts to adhere the plate to the remote housing. This can be done prior to assembly of the unit in the car.
Presto! you now have a complete setup. It works fine....just so long as it doesn't get all soggy with oil. The whole idea was to get rid of transmission/engine vibrations on the more 'sedate' :lol: 1100/1300 cars.
The second way is to find a Mini remote diff housing....they do align...most of the time...ish!
I have a setup like this in the barn...if you need a picture I can dig it up for you.

I have had the sandwich plate type in a Mini before and seem to
remember there being clearance problems with the exhaust pipe.

Perhaps it was too awkward to get the sandwich plate bolts out
without removing the LCB manifold...?

My Mini-Marcos also had one but the rubber at the back was a
Ford Pinto engine mount rubber with one of the M10 threads
being tapped and wound straight into the back of the casting...
(And a suitable bespoke bracket...)

Thanks for the advice....think I will try and source a box without the sandwich plate mounting...

Note to self...more research before hitting the buy it now button!

the sandwich boxes are actually often quite a good buy as they tend to be cheaper than the mini ones (when your not excitedly buying them, obviously :lol: ) and are a good source of 'guts' for rebuilding

the mainshafts, forks etc are normally in far better shape than the stuff that comes out of (normally) thrashed mini boxes.

I will always buy them if they are local and just add them to my 'stash'


don't just ignore them because the case is 'wrong'
