I have been offered the following engine for my Hillclimb / Track car, comments guys really and perhaps a value what you might think its worth, poss bhp on a weber 45 ? 500 miles on it

I think its about what im looking for

1380 offset bored
piper 300 degree cam with ultra light followers
35.6 mm inlet valves 31mm exhaust valves
21.2cc chambers with double valve springs
omega pistons
11.7:1 compression ratio
ultra light flywheel
turbo crank with centre main strap
ap backplate with orange diaphragm clutch
minispares straight cut box with straight cut drop gears 3.7 final drive
sh cam drive kit

value is going to depend on who built it? doesn't matter how good the ingredients are if its undercooked..

bhp potential, tricky, I'm not familiar with the cam, absolute guess 130bhp??? maybe more, I'm sure there'll be someone along shortly with a better idea.

Does it come with some sort of guaranteed performance and a warranty?

If not, then in my books, it's not worth much more than any other second hand engine & gearbox. Just my view.

Yes, the first time the bendix engages the warranty expires.

Yeah, the Bendix Warrenty, haven't seen that offered around these parts for an extended time. All they usually offer here now is the Concrete Warrenty - once it leaves the Concrete, it's outa warrenty,,,,,,

But the other guys do off a Full 1 / 2 Warrenty - Once you've bought it, it's Two late,,,,,,,,,,

What I'd pay.

Engine less box. £600
Box/Drops £500

I'd expect it to go for £12-1350 on ebay.

To put things into perspective. I paid £570 a while ago for a very similar 1430 with remote SCCR and salisbury lsd, shafts and S brakes.

People on ebay seem to pay double the sensible price. It could be a load of sh1t. It could also be something else, unless you take it to bits.

I bought a 1380 with a piper 270.... it turned out to be +60 on a 286.

Caveat emptor.

Sounds like a typical and good hillclimb engine though. If it had a 286, it would be what I call a typical spec.

Good advice, the vendor wants a bit more but I'm with you on this one, I think you on the Money

What you have to remember is that if it's not proven it hasn't been thrashed, the value reflects it, if it had been thrashed. So, all the hassle of stripping it and new bearings if required. There is a few £100 in hassle there already. SC box could also have a hideously worn first and need new laygear.

Got to see it.

My job is telling people (usually as an intermediate to a lender) whether their house has mine workings under it. You start off searching old documents, if something comes up which suggests the house might be knackered, you then drill it with a massive drill to look for voids. If voids are found, it usually gets very expensive and people run away hysterically.

If you are a cash buyer, the whole above process is not necessary. I have heard of some cash buyers coming to grief bigtime when their house starts disappearing down a mine.

It's the same with an engine. If you cannot see it is fresh with your own eyes, you have to assume the worst, otherwise what you spend is a bet and your risk that it may be worse.

However, there are plenty of romantic muppets on ebay ready to pay £2000 for such a thing and I imagine the come to grief occasionally. Even flashing an engine up and seeing whether it smokes and driving it around the block isn't really a test. If you're paying a fortune, you've got to see it's good. This would involve splitting the engine/box and looking at the gears and a couple of bearings/bores MINIMUM.

Real answer is not how much power it produces but what power will it give reliably, you've got to finish to win. This sounds like another of the endless bitsa engines you see and you may be lucky maybe a wheel barrow job. Eg if the head was a slark or long man would make him a big difference to the power and value. Unless you can road test it or is by a reputable builder assume its a heap of crap and offer accordingly, there will be another one along in a minute.
