100mph Cooper Speedo differences

Post by rolesyboy »

I bought a 100mph dead speedo with 5 digits plus trip which i was going to fit to my 998 Mk1 Cooper.
I have now realized that this is in fact a 997 Mk1 Cooper speedo (serial number looks like it ends '06') so arguably rarer but not the correct one for my car
I have a feeling that very early Mk1 997 Coopers had a 5 digit odometer with no trip so the question is what period of 997 would this be suitable for? I am guessing 62-64 but would like clarification. If anybody wants it I will be putting it in the for sale section once I have established what it is for.
Thanks. Mark

Do you really mean it has a separate trip or just a 10ths digit?

Separate trip = ££££££ Ker-ching so not surprisingly I haven't got a separate trip.
Sorry Simon, I didn't explain that very well.
Mine is the poor mans version with 10ths of a mile in yellow at the end. Cheers

I have a Cooper speedo with a trip (as well as a Cooper S one and a silver 850 mini one), so they exist. The 6 digit 100 dead without trip starts in May 62 and should be SN4479/06. The 5 digit SN4409/06 starts in Oct 61 and carries on until April 62.
Someone else may be able to pin it down by chassis number. The almond green 997 I just sold last year had the 5 digit odometer.

This is the one. No orange lights Ian. Think they must have been an optional extra LOL

That one is too early for a 1967.

It should be this style

Hi Simon, yep I know it's too early. It's a 997 speedo. Just wanted to clarify what years this particular type was fitted. Looks like 62 -64. Earlier ones had 5 digit odometer. Cheers

Thanks Nick , the one in Simons photos does no look right or is it me ??
It is the right style i.e with the two additional orange lights, but not the correct centre in terms of SN code; hence the reason I specifically used the word 'style'.
