Steering Rack Identification
Steering rack question; is there any way to tell me what i've got here? Is this a mk1 or mk2 rack? I am trying to sort through several racks and arms I have here and I am looking for my original mk1 rack and arms so I get the right geometry.
How do you tell a mk1 from a mk2 rack?
Thanks

Re: Steering Rack Identification
Mk1 rack has about 2.3 turns side to side.
Mk2 has about 2.7 turns if I remember correctly.
Mk2 also usually has rack centralising machined hole in the inner rack (with a plastic plug in the rack housing) that can be accessed through the grommet in the floor on the other side of the toe board to the column shaft.

Re: Steering Rack Identification
Andrew, caution with the centering hole comparison. Reproduction racks have been made for Mk II+ that do not have the hole.
Anyone know what the turns are for the Pose Pack (a.k.a. Sports Pack) racks?

That's what I thought and not all production MKII racks had them either.cheleker wrote:Andrew, caution with the centering hole comparison. Reproduction racks have been made for Mk II+ that do not have the hole.

Thanks, that's something to remember.cheleker wrote:Andrew, caution with the centering hole comparison. Reproduction racks have been made for Mk II+ that do not have the hole.

The number of turns side to side is the easiest way to determine Mk1 from Mk2 then ?

Re: Steering Rack Identification
I know a MkI has 2.7 turns and MkII is less, so, Andrew1967's numbers are backwards. FYI you can't mix and match MkI/II racks and MkI/II steering arms.

Hmm, maybe I have got it arse about face and stand to be corrected if so, Larry.LarryLebel wrote:I know a MkI has 2.7 turns and MkII is less, so, Andrew1967's numbers are backwards. FYI you can't mix and match MkI/II racks and MkI/II steering arms.
I thought the Mk1 rack had the fewer number of turns which explains the much poorer turning circle of a Mk1

Re: Steering Rack Identification
I'm sure a MKI had fewer turns than a MKII, the MKI has 15 teeth on the rack and the MKII had 25.Andrew1967 wrote:Hmm, maybe I have got it arse about face and stand to be corrected if so, Larry.LarryLebel wrote:I know a MkI has 2.7 turns and MkII is less, so, Andrew1967's numbers are backwards.
