My mk3 cooper s came with an alternator when I bought it but I was unsure if this would have been the case?? I checked the John Parnell bible but can't find the answer. The car came off the production line in March 1971. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Dynamo would still be most likely, but Alternator is a possibility by 1971.

Your engine number will tell you what your car originally had.

12H397 Cooper S Mk3 with dynamo, negative earth and EN16T Tuiftrided crankshaft
12H398 Cooper S Mk3 with alternator, negative earth and EN16T Tuftrided crankshaft

The first Lucas alternators had external rectifiers and voltage regulators. The next generation for a short period had internal regulation with a 5-pin connector and the last, and current kind, had 3-pin connectors. I'm going to guess a MkIII S had the 5-pin connector version.

My car was built in March 1971 with a 397 engine but when restored in 2004 we added an Alternator and upgraded loom.
