Remote problem

Hi,

A friend recently bought a '63 Austin 850 that had a 1275 & remote transplanted by a previous owner. While a runner, the car has some needs and so is not currently road legal, having only been moved about the storage area thus far. The other day when he was going to move it again he noted that the gear lever now feels like it is not connected to anything. None of the resistance one normally feels with a remote. I suspect a pin in the shift rod may have come loose or failed but I have never taken a remote linkage apart.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

if you mean a rod type remote its probably the mounting bushes that have failed - they make the whole lever (and its remote box) flop around

Hi Rich,

It's not a rod change but an actual 'remote' with the cast aluminum housing extending off the back of the diff. I've not examined the case up close and the car has not been put on a lift yet so I am not sure what it came out of?

While somewhat a bitsa, the car itself is in very good shape with a rust free shell and Cooper S brakes, but it has a number of niggles (some questionable electrical mods + the normal issues one sees when a car has sat for a long time), so it has not be road registered yet. This gearbox issue is just another to add to the 'list' of things that need to be done to it..

Anyway, when looking at it in the car, the lever itself sits normally between the seats and is not any lower or 'offset' than if all was well but when you grasp and move it back and forth or side to side, it's as if the lever is not connected to anything - no resistance. That is were I though perhaps a pin had come loose or failed?

Slack mounting bolts where remote fits to diff.
Slack bolt on knuckle at top of diff casing.
Slack bolt on fore aft rod at bottom of gear lever.
Missing nylon cup on bottom of gear lever if it has always been the same and not a developing problem.
