Masters

We've been that busy recently that my new racer has been stood unloved, except last week our manfinished the power unit. I looked at the calendar and realised that I can't get to the Donington round and even the Mallory round is suspect so, in the manner of all things sensible in view of the upcoming bus pass, we're going to try to get it out for Silverstone classic in 4 weeks
This is just a slight challenge:
I have some questions at this stage:
Fuel tank capacity: I was recommended 40-50 litres for a 45 - 60 minute race. Seems big to me looking at the Youles one
I can get one very similar locally quickly that will take 6.3 gallons/ 28 odd litres. Is this big enough?
Needles: I want to run it in on the road and am looking for suggestions on needles for H4's
Wheels: I shall talk to Rich about some Minilifes unless someone has some (magnesium/ordinary ) Minlites at the right money, as rosepetals are a bit of a luxury moneywise at this stage. Oh and tyres are expensive, it has been noted

my tank would hold 25 litres and was fine for a 40 min race - i think it would be a problem in 60 min, but would have to sit and work it out.
the other way to work it out was that my car would do between 10.2 - 10.8 mpg when racing, so you can work out the expected fuel requirments for circuits from that - it will be a rough calc for you, but may give you an idea

Tim,
The tank of mine that you show is 25 litres, and proved OK for my 970cc but a little short for the 1293cc engines in a 50 minute race.
I am having a 30 litre tanks made but of course wouldn't be needed for the two 20 minutes Mini races at Silverstone.

Does it not need to be 50L to match the homologation forms ?
Not that you need all that capacity unless you were planning on running in Spa 6 Hours !!
I think we have a spare set of Minilifes, maybe PM may dad I think he was looking at shifting these.

As this is a safety issue, there is no need to meet the maximum homologated capacity and as you say unless at Spa 6 hours why carry the weight.

According to App.K - tank is "free" as long as it's filled with foam and does not exceed homologated volume.

Oh well our new tank is 50L - DOUGH !!!
Looks like we'll be even slower than before
I can't see that extra weight of Aluminium being high in percentage terms between a 35L and 50L tank, even a weakling could easily pick up our new tank up with one hand !!! Probably a kilo or two difference at most ? Guess the weight between different manufactureres might depend on other factors such as how thick the aluminium is etc.. etc..

Hi Yorkie,
I should have been clearer, I was assuming the basis of someone filling it up so the weight of fuel would have made a difference.

Now that would be silly wouldn't it
I guess its easier if yoou've got a 30-35L tank and you know you need to brim it - leaves less margin for error !

the most i have used in race trim is 27 litres in a 40 min race

We reckon on 30 litres for a 45 minute races (Masters) & 40 litres for the 60 minute races (U2TC). Obviously there are various factors that might influence this, amount of full throttle, likelihood of a safety car etc.. etc..
This comes with a health warning of being highly unscientific and very much finger in the air "Ruff arse Racing" Northern Boy Stuff !

Whilst I was perusing the old forum for old messages I found this new post about Masters, hopefully Tommy will turn up here, it's an interesting argument and one I have some sympathy with :
Hallo Mark and all other miniracers,
Well, there are so many faces in the new Mini pre-66 Masters Series so it is hard to log all " self invented " alterations in regard of Appendix K. We were delighted to hear that Roy would start this one make racing. But soon it proved that Appendix K was something very unbrittish so it had to be altered beyond recognition. I should off course had understand this would not do as ignition and gear box was altered day one and outside Appendix K.
Now it seams as long as you have a mini with 970cc to 1293 the rest of the car can be totaly to you likeing. It is really sad that not a strict Appendix K class could be running in the homecoutry of the Mini. In
Sweden we run a up to 1000cc App.K class E and F pre-66. About 20-25 cars apperars every meting ( five double headers ). This week end at Ring Knutstorp worldschampion Stig Blomquist appeared with a Saab Sport 2-stroke.
So, I can not understand why there not are App.K minis in numbers in such a large coutry compared with little Sweden that could make an exelent grid to help Ron to get this going insted of this " band aid " junk.
As I sadly had to say no to Goodwood last year due to back problems I did look forward very much to Silverstone Classic this year. My total cost to do this race as cheep as possible will end up at 3000 Euros for some minutes at Silverstone so I rather go to the Carabean a week.
