transistorized ignition
Hi,
just fighting with my new FIA passport. Does anyone know when a transistorized ignition was first used with the mini and perhaps what type it was?
Thank you very much and best regards

Re: transistorized ignition
transistorised ignitions were available in the mid 60s, but the proper hall effect stuff for a racing mini was freely available in the early 70s. Do you want the proper Lucas kit?

Re: transistorized ignition
Thanks, but the FIA regulations says, that if there have any transistorized ignitions been used in time, other ones will be allowed too. I know that for example Lucas used it for some race cars, but cannot prove that it was used in the mini, neither with VITA nor with Jim Whitehouse or others.

Noone
OK, than it must become coil and breaker. I asked Aldon and they proposed an Aldon red. Still tried without big succes. That now means triing weights and springs. ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif)

Re: transistorized ignition
In the meantime I got an information from the owner of the BRVT Racer. They just used coils and breakers. OK, I will learn to handle an Aldon. Does someone know, why the Aldon uses 3Ohm coils instead of 6Ohm coils?

Why bother trying to prove some obscure detail about electronic ignition for all you have to do is beat Nick Swift and numerous customers of Swiftune running their Appendix K compliant engines with the homologated Dec 31 1965 points distributor. Keep it simple!

Re: transistorized ignition
Hi, thanks, but it is not only a pleasure to run a mini, it's even a pleasure to build one to beat others. If you are an engineer, you may have such obscure ambitions.
I use some parts from Nick, but will learn myself why and if.
. But there is annother reason. Nicks annex K cars are period F. Ours is to become a Period G1 8-port short stroke. That means completely different rules. Be lucky if you are far away from FIA.

So where and in what series do you plan to race?Astro wrote:Hi, thanks, but it is not only a pleasure to run a mini, it's even a pleasure to build one to beat others. If you are an engineer, you may have such obscure ambitions.I use some parts from Nick, but will learn myself why and if.

just to continue the french hill climb championchip for historic cars with a period G2 (70-71) car. The FIA asked everyone for a new more detailed 26 pages pass Port.

Wasn't it Nev Trickett that developed a dizzy that ran at lower speed for his Minisprint racer?

yep, two sets of points running on only two (instead of four) heels on the cam in the dizzy
so the dizzy was effectively running at 'half speed', so the points wouldn't bounce to 12,000rpm (technically)
a neat solution originally used on bikes I think
