Mk1 stalk flasher help needed

Hi,

After a little advice, wiring isn't my strongest point haha, but I've got my indicators to work on my mk1 rebuild however the light on the end of the stalk won't flash, however if I take a test light from the drop bracket to the stalk itself it flashes.

I've two new Lucas flasher units, but I'm now having a brain fart and can't work out where I'm going wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Oli

As mentioned before, it could be a bad earth to the column or steering rack, I've had that before. Another possibility is that the arm is not earthing through the pivot pin. Both should be easy to check. I usually solder an small braided earth wire from the arm to the switch body to fix the arm earth problem.

Check the bulb first as Larry said. If the bulb is bad, then you can start looking for bad earth connections and/or broken wires.

After having a quick look tonight I'm going to guess that it's not earthing properly through the column since its been powder coated.

Bulb works ok, as I can get it to flash buy earthing the column with the test light.

Al, I'll take a look at the pivot, I take it that you just solder a piece of wire from the bottom of the stalk to the body of the unit to help the earth and then oncee it's moved up/down it completes the circuit so it flashes?

Check things out first by using a small length of wire earthed securely at one end and touch it on the arm. The bulb should blink. If it does, then earth the switch body, which should be earthed through the column. This should tell you whether the problem is with the arm or the column. I have found it quite common for there to be earth problems through a worn arm pivot pin.

Sorted, used a ring connector and fixed that to the unit clamp screw, then ran wire down the indicator loom and joined it to an earth in the loom, now have a strong flash.

Thanks for all the help!
