Cooper remote gearstick hole

Hi. Does anyone know why some early Cooper remote gearshift holes(the square one in the tunnel) have two notches cut out of them whereas some are just a simple square hole? Parnell's book page 113 shows the one with the notches, page 116 shows the one without. M-machine panels have the notches and I just wondered what's right for a MK1 1965 Cooper? Thanks
