A member of TMF (MaxAndPaddy) has asked the government for the number of Mini's that were scrapped under the £2000 Scrappage Scheme in 2009 using the Freedom of Information Act. To his surprise they supplied all the data which reveals 702 Mini's were scrapped under the scheme including several limited/special editions.



You may remember BMW stepped in (after protests from classic Mini enthusiasts) and told a Scottish MINI Dealer to remove a Mini Cooper Sportpack from on display as being traded in for £2000 scrappage against a New MINI.
This was the apology later issued:-
"Douglas Park MINI of Hamilton did not intend to cause any offence by using a classic Mini to advertise the scrappage scheme in its dealer forecourt. BMW dealers in the area are using older BMW models in a similar manner and several other manufacturers have also adopted this approach. However, it is fully accepted that using a classic Mini in this way may have been interpreted as insensitive. This has been recognised and the car has now been removed."

Looks like a mk1 golf peeping into the frame on the second shot.

They could have at least limited it to a sale of a vehicle built in the uk. Instead, the roads for flooded with Korean crap.

I bought a 'dog' a couple of years ago that looked JUST like the blue one with the number 6 on the door. it was off ebay, a 1.3 spi auto - I gave 300 quid for it and the bloke even delivered it!


in all likelihood, even if the scrappage scheme hadn't happened, any of the minis in the photo would have been broken for spares by now.

Sure, some of the cars weren't worth two grand. Oddly, quite a few probably were worth MORE than two grand!

However, I have to question the economic and environmental credentials of enticing the scrappage of perfectly good rolling stock, especially given that a fair proportion (I'd guess the majority) went into foreign companies. It's no surprise the roads are now awash with Kias and Hyundais these days. If the government were handing out cash, it should have shored up manufacturing in the UK.

Margaret Thatchers Government subsidized BL with 2.9 Billion between 1997 and 1988 of Taxpayers money , Throwing good money after bad, In 1981 inflation was running at around 12 percent , the workers got 3.8 percent pay rise and Sir Michael Edwards got 38 percent , What about the Phoenix four

I agree with Rich, non of those cars were worth £2K from the looks if it (though the red Sprite at the front looks decent!) , makes you wonder how many were bought for £500 just to part ex? There used to be a breakers in Bolton that I'm sure many of you knew who's yard looked like that , only all Mk1 and Mk2s!

Yes, totally agree about the mis management of Rover, surely one of our greatest failings as a nation, but I still fail to see the logic in pouring UK taxpayers money into the likes of Kia/Hyundai etc etc. I must admit, I was tempted by the scrappage scheme, I was running an R Reg Escort at the time and came close to buying something fairly uninteresting new. I wouldn't have got away with a Bini Cooper S..!

Sadly this is nothing to do with the scrappage scheme it's because companies like this build cheap, reliable, boring transport boxes that usually carry a warranty that lasts 5 or 7 years. It's called exceptional value.

Or it's certainly the case when compared to my Audi A4 Quattro that is not even 2 years old, is out of warranty & has cost me nearly 2 grand in the last 3 weeks with 3 separate breakdowns.

1st. The water pump bearings collapsed less than 3,000 miles after the warranty expired. Audi told me to get stuffed!

2nd. The EGR valve stopped working & had to be replaced. The local Audi dealer keeps 44 of these in stock, so I suspect it could be a common fault, that costs £600 to fix!

3rd. The F*^^ing bearings in the alternator went. the alternator alone cost £380!!!!!

After experience like this I'm tempted to buy a car from Korea or Japan myself!

I know the feeling Mark....cost me £1200 to replace a supercharger on my last Mercedes C-Class 200K family car while out of warranty, so I thought I would go for a longer lasting diesel capable of intergalactic mileage this time....an E90 BMW 320D, a great car all round to drive, but the turbo started making a siren noise last week at only 60,000 miles and I have just got another unexpected bill for £975 to fit a reconditioned turbo using a trusted independent (Main Dealer would be £2000+). Makes those 5 or 7 year warranties on boring Kias look quite tempting when manufacturers like Audi, Mercedes and BMW just say sorry its not their problem with no 'goodwill' available.....even when some internet research often shows you are just one of many with similar problems.
