Are the frames on these rechromable? If so, how do I get them apart to release the glass?

One of the frames has already come apart, seperating the hinge from teh rest of it, not sure if this is a good or a bad thing?!

Yes.

Not easy. Undo the screws, that will no doubt have rusted solid or even through, that hold the hinge in. These are almost impossible to undo. then carefully part the frame releasing the glass from the rubber seal. Easy as that!

As the Haynes manual used to say, re assembly is a reverse of this procedure. However, it is almost impossible. If your surround is still intact after stripping, something that is moderately unlikely, you can re assemble using a bead of sikkaflex instead of the rubber seal, this makes assembly much easier.

It is a very, very bad thing, it means that the lug that holds the screw for the hinge has already rusted through or broken.

It is possible to re assemble the rear quarters sticking the whole thing together with sikkaflex, this will repair a broken window, but is PERMANENT!

What are the frames made of? Can't be beyond the wit of my friendly metalworker to braze in a new lug or two so that the frame can be screwed together again, can it? (he asks with the naivety of someone only just started shovelling cash in the general direction of a pile of rust..)

The original lugs were rivited, you could make & re rivet replacements. I don't know of anyone who has done this though.

As mark said you can repair these without using the rubber . I used a tube of black windscreen adhesive . Run a thick bead of it in the chrome frames then taped it altogether . I didn't even wipe off any excess . Left overnight the excess came off with a razor blade . Where I run the blade around the edge of the chrome it even looked like it had the rubber seals . I do it this way all the time now .... Ken

I fixed one of the windows. I made a splicing strap from stainless steel sheet, drilled and tapped holes for the screws than pop riveted the strap to the frame. It was a piece of cake.

Pretty much what we have done with some Mk2 windows. Maybe a little easier as no hinge involved but same principle.

They can be rebuild, thats no problem. I've have build a couple of sets of Them. Had Them Rechromed and so. They're made of steel, thats why they rust.

I would absolutely use the correct rubber, or Else you cant repair Them again as Mark Said.

They mostly brake at the little bracket, so you can make a new one and have Them fitted with new metal rivets before they are rechomed.

You can find Them on eBay

You can one of my sets here.

Thanks for sharing that, nice 1071 too!

Do the frames only come apart at the hinge or do they come apart at any other point? Otherwise, how does the glass get in there?

Thanks for that.. Glad you like my restoration.

The frame only comes together on theese points. Then Sample Them with 4 small chromed screws. You have to twist the frame carefully over the glass when you put it together again. The most hard part are to get the glass into the rubberseal. That can be quite a job. I sprayed silicone on the glass and seal, and carefully used a rubberhammer to knock the frame correctly together.
