1972 Mini 1275 GT

Post by surfblue63 »

I've finally got the GT I've been saying I've been looking for. Some may have spotted it on Ebay a few weeks ago and after placing a bid on it I went to view it. It wasn't long before a price was negotiated and a deposit was left.
A week later I was on the train down south with the cash and a servo for my Innocenti stashed in my overnight bag. Trains are still one of my most disliked forms of transport with people having no regard for reserved seats, noisey kids in "quiet" carriages, and a half hour delay for a spurious safety reason.
Eventually I got to pick up the GT and drive it to Newbury. After a rest on Sunday to get over my train journey, I travelled back up north, via MiniMail, to Newcastle. I wanted to get rid of the centre exit exhaust so I picked up a side exit RC40 from Tim, along with the correct interior door handles, a new boot lock and a couple of other odds and ends. Amazingly Tim had a couple of original door seals with the correct Limeflower edging.
The GT performed well, doing around 35mpg at a steady 60mph. I had to stop for fuel 3 times though as it has a 5.5 gallon tank. It has a bit of a thirst for oil, but on closer inspection this could be due to the way the breather system has been done. When fitting the new exhaust on the Tuesday it was noticed that there's a breather pipe dumping oil to the near side of the subframe. Unfortunately the clutch has started to slip, so I had to call up Tim for a replacement.
I'm very happy with it and will be driving to a few events before the winter, the next major event will be the Gold Cup.

Here's a couple of shots of how the car looked the day after I picked it up.

That does look nice! Are you going to put a LH tank in to complete the S pack?

Are the silver door handles the ones you've removed? Might be interested in them if they're up for grabs.....

Yep, those are the ones that have been removed. Send a PM with an offer.

No I won't be fitting a "RH" tank. After 150 miles it's usually about time to get out and stretch my legs so the single tank isn't a problem.

I was just going to turn up in it at Croft, hence why I've kept a bit quiet about it. But now due to the weather forecast and the slipping clutch I am leaving it at home this weekend. You'll still get to see it on Monday at the Cow.

What a great car well done i bet you are well chuffed with that one.

I love the early GT's always had a soft spot for them, dam never owned one yet.

Also now like the early clubby estates fake wood and warts an all lol.

Did you ever sort out whether it should have had the black kick strips that I gave you ? Or does anyone else know what they were fitted to?

I've looked at the sale brochures of the period and it gives a bit of a conflicting spec. The interior picture of the Clubman Saloon shows the trim fitted, but the Clubman Estate has no trim fitted. On the GT the pictures don't show the bottom of the door aperture. As the ally one I took off had 5 holes and the black one you supplied me have 4 holes I have left them off for now.

A lovely GT, I love the Interior too.

I don't think you can beat an early one on 10" wheels.

Nick

I sold it about 6 months ago. I was at a show in the summer and some asked if I'd be interested in selling. A few weeks later a deal was struck at it was gone. The money has gone towards the Inno that I got from Ed and the much needed body repairs of my Rover Cooper MPi. The GT was a great car, nice and quiet, for a Mini, enough poke from the warmed up 1293 engine and the enjoyment of having something that you don't see to many of.
