No floor numbers

Post by gs.davies »

My car (Nov '61 Austin) is probably going to get a complete replacement floor during it's restoration and whilst my car looks like it has completely original floors, there's not a trace of the floor tags anywhere. It doesn't look like it's ever been welded on the floor so that for me rules out the usual footwell repairs unless it was done exceptionally well some time in the 80's when it'd have just been someone's 'old' Mini.

The floor is a correct Mk1 item apart from the oversills that were fitted at a guess in the early 90's prior to my ownership. It doesn't look like it's ever had a complete floor fitted either (in fact were they even available prior to the early 90's?)

Did all floors have tags?

No definately not all.

The places quoted for body number tags are just the possible places for these - not a guarantee.

I agree, floor numbers are by no means a guaranteed fixture.

I have an Austin Seven Cooper that was manufactured in December 1961 - just a month after your car. I know that it has its original floor pan, which due to underseal from new remains intact, but like yours it has no floor number tags. I have the body number tag on the bonnet locking platform and the FE number plate on the LH flitch panel above the radiator housing. Perhaps this confirms that floor numbers were not fitted to all cars.

Inner wing stiffener by the fuse box & regulator, rear bonnet gutter, bonnet slam panel or on a tag by the speedo (in the engine bay) are quite common.

And in my case, written on tyre chalk/crayon on the panel behind the rear seat back rest.
