Early Austin Speedos
Has anyone got details/pictures etc of what a Speedo should look like in a November 1961 Austin Seven? When my car came to me it had a 70's clock in it, later that changed to a black faced clock from a '65 car. I have a silver faced clock with the triangular wide plastic needle but I'm not sure if that's correct for my car either!
Anyone?

If it's speedos your interested in, I believe Nick Rogers (min-e-bitz) is your man! He has a fine collection and extensive knowledge on the subject...

Haha, it's the devices that measure how fast your car is going that interest me. This has nothing to do with the smuggling of small domestic pet birds..tintoptom wrote:If it's speedos your interested in, I believe Nick Rogers (min-e-bitz) is your man! Thats an early Morris Mini speedo.gs.davies wrote:Has anyone got details/pictures etc of what a Speedo should look like in a November 1961 Austin Seven? I have a silver faced clock with the triangular wide plastic needle but I'm not sure if that's correct for my car either!

What you need is a cream faced speedo with a thin red needle. No tenths. The glass should have a sharp edged chrome bezel.

I understand that Austins could have a silver dial if they were assembled at the Morris Cowley plant, there should be a 'M' in the chassis number to denote a Cowley car.

Mines a longbridge car.
Need to look out for an Austin clock then. Are they hard to come by?

I was lucky to find the correct (silver) one on ebay sometime ago. I guess you could try speedy cables, they might be able to screen print your dial and supply the correct pointer?gs.davies wrote:Mines a longbridge car.

Re: Early Austin Speedos
What a fantastic way to handle the face graphics ! I wonder how much that cost him and if the process could be done with other forms of paint.
On a Triumph board I visit a guy took a similar approach where he painted the face black and applied some form of vinyl masking. I believe it was a laser he used next to photo etch away the vinyl where he needed "white". After a quick clean he sprayed white paint onto the mask and once that dried the mask was peeled away.

Re: Early Austin Speedos
The needle looks like it's a red painted version of the 'standard' white needle - is that right?
The clock I have doesn't have 10ths on it, but is just the wrong face colour. Might have to look into that laser etching..

Re: Early Austin Speedos
I saw that - its looks like a silver face - but probably worth asking the seller directly.
If it is a cream one, £50 looks reasonable.

Re: Early Austin Speedos
The one on ebay is a silver one with the needle from and Austin cream one fitted. He even gives the SN for a 5 digit silver one. SN4410/00.
Here's another interesting detail : all black and cream mk1 speedos have the glass fitted so it is convex. All silver ones have it concave.

850man, you've just reminded me of a couple of things, but here's one.
This speedo was fitted to a very good mate's 60 car, I believe it is original
