I'm off to the Gaydon BMC & Leyland Show on Sunday, anyone else going?

It's a good show if you are interested in the relics of BMC and BL with plenty of Allegros, Marinas, Maxis etc on show. Also Gaydon wheel out a few odds and ends from the stores that are not usually part of the museum exhibits.

We'll be there with a stand of 15 cars booked in. Got 3 members of the BMC design team from the 59's & 60's on our stand too.

I took the Inno to Gaydon via MINI Oxford



After a run with the Cowley Convoy I arrived at Gaydon to find a great array of cars on display.

There were all types of Minis on show

from the oldest...



...to the last off the line.



One Mini of note was the electric powered 1964 Countryman that was converted in 1964-65 by AEI. The car is powered by a 96v motor with the rear seats being replaced by batteries. More information on this car can be found at http://www.minitravellerandcountrymanre ... &Itemid=45









This year sees the 50th anniversary of the Land Crab, and their club put on a great display with well over 50 examples, including 3 works cars and an Australian built Ute.

Other notable cars were this very rare Riley Two-Point-Six...



...with a superb wood and leather interior. Note the gear lever position!



There was an ordinary looking MG Midget, which was far from ordinary under the bonnet. It featured a nice period Arden 8-port with a brace of Amal carbs.





Gaydon wheeled out the Triplex 10-20 Glassback Princess designed by OGLE.





Also on show were two of only three Leyland P76s that reside in the UK.

ive often wondered what the rear floor of that electric traveller must be like with all the acid that must have fized out the batteries over the years.

I missed the 2.6 but look at the design of the seat to allow gear changes. Reminds me of learning to drive in a car with a handbrake to the right of the drivers seat. At least Navigators could not create unintentional handbrake turns. A great set of photos, loved the comments.

Fab collection of pictures there u have posted surf.. especially the elec Mini..i have never seen that one before !!! one cool relevant car in this day and age ...yr pics are a great historical record for this and the MCR forums ... great stuff !!! foxy52

50 years ahead of it's time you could say..I do have quite a bit on that car if I could only find it.

Is the electric estate owned by Gaydon ?

The Electric estate is not owned by Gaydon. It was on loan to the Mini Traveller & Countryman Register from another museum. They did tell me where but I have forgotton. Ian, who runs the register knows all about it. http://minitravellerandcountrymanregister.com/

I did bury a link in my original post where there is more information about the electric Countryman, which is in the above quote.

The car was acquired by the Abbey Pumping Station Museum in Leicester in 1982.

Only recently there were able to find an electrical expert to help get the car mobile and then have the car repainted. Ian, from the Traveller and Countryman Register, tells me that they are planning on taking the Countryman to MIRA to see how it performs compared to when it was first built.

Got to say DAE is a brilliant car to drive, very odd though. Rich you are right it is very heavy. It's down on the bump stops. Bit's of electrical gear everywhere even under the front wings etc etc. Made it very hard to work on, but worth it in the end
