I started this thread a couple of years ago , This is the same dust cover now completely F****d , Car was in for a MOT in October and the nice man say's its failed with a smile on his face , OK whats wrong , The dust cover over the suspension as perished , Yes but it was perished last MOT and its only a year old , Hah things have changed and its now included in the test if water can get in , But do you know what a operation it is to change this cover , again he just smiled and shrugged his shoulders and said by the way its failed on the rear brakes also , That's another story.

Big Question beside Delphi looking promising is any of the other rubber sold got any better or is it still SHITE

We use a rubber stretch gator for cv boots at work and they are near on indistructable, they have also started making boots for track rod ends and ball joints. They claimed the cv boots had a lifetime warranty . I've never changed one under warranty and I've been at the place 10years plus. Looking at that knuckle joint I'm sure a balljoint gator would fit

I rescued some old ones whilst stripping the radius arms I sold to Rich a few weeks back.

Very old but no splits !

Could probably spare a couple

Could try a bottle of superglue on the cracks. I find it quite theraputic!

ive just bought a pair of these to test out on the trackrods of my GTM, its really obvious on that when they are failing as you can see them when the bonnet is up - not hidden away like on mini.


they are the perfect size for trackrod ends and would fit knuckle joints as well at a push, or he does sell a slightly larger one

he does them in blue, black and clear - I chose blue so I don't forget that they are the silicon one

they are expensive when compared to rubber ones, but if they last for ever worth looking at.

I've just started a new thread regarding this subject - of piss poor rubber boots and seals etc. If you can get good rubber stuff for your Nortons and Triumphs there's no reason why the parts suppliers shouldn't be able to get it too

how about CV gaiters, the last ones I fitted lasted all of two month before splitting. Given the work involved would rather pay more and not redo the job every couple of month.

Not used them myself as I am still using nos parts,

Quite and something doesn't add up in regards to rubber we are being pedaled.

We've got some 10 pages in this very thread of examples poor rubber parts for our cars that is currently on the market.

However, items like the Rubber Cones, Competition Bump Stops, Ordinary Bump Stops - all of which are made in the UK and then there's the range of rubber from Japan - all these are OEM quality or better.

So, how is it some rubbers, like Goff's Knuckle Boots, CV Boots, Rack Boots, Suspension Arm Seals, Ball Joint Covers etc are crud ?

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, it's nothing to do with so called 'modern rubber', I've just listed specific examples of 'modern rubber' that is fine as well as that that's currently fitted to Nortons Triumphs as well as all other new cars on the market today.

Volumes don't have anything to do with it either.


While the Poly bits for some stuff maybe an interim solution, I don't feel it's the answer and clearly, there isn't a need to go down that road.

I seem to recall that 'modern rubber' is made from reconstituted rubber. made from rubber granules and compressed under heat. Yes, it's rubber but not 'real' rubber of a known quality. It's a mix of all-sorts. And this is what disintegrates. I could be wrong and even my chemist classic car owner James isn't that certaibn. But Norton and Triumph owners know. And if you sell them crap reconstituted foot rests and kick start rubbers they'd come round and........... They won't accept it!

I cannot be the only person who is bored to death with this particular subject. It has been covered many, many times & as far as I can see has been done to death.

Ok, some suppliers have had / have ongoing issues with crap rubber components. Where this is the case I would suggest the buyer takes them back & gets a refund. If we all keep doing this they will eventually get the message that these parts aren't good enough.

There are long lasting good quality alternatives available, these are expensive, but seem to do the trick.

Since this issue was first discussed here, Catmint has started supplying top quality alternatives to some parts, and Minispares now seem to be offering a better quality knuckle / ball joint gaiter. To my mind this seems to indicate that things are moving in the right direction.

NOS parts are available too if you are prepared to hunt them down & pay the price.

So there ARE alternatives out there, simply whinging on about stuff & not doing anything constructive seems pointless to me.
